An SU-25 Frogfoot ground attack plane was shot down in Northwest Syria and early reports say that the pilot who ejected was subsequently killed on the ground by rebels. It is not clear yet which rebels were responsible for downing the plane with a Manpad SAM.

It would be interesting to learn of the type and origin of the Manpad used by the rebels.

Implications and ramifications of the shoot-down will be interesting to follow.

Condolences to the pilot's family and to the 30 odd families of Syrian rebels who were killed in reprisal raids soon after the downing of the plane.

Cheers.

These are al Qeda rebels in Idlib and the Russians usually react disproportionatlely to deaths of their aviators and more will come. ISIS rebels from Alleppo were bused to Idlib by their own choice. Sort of a Die now or Die later deal. This is later. This is also hotbed central of USA trained, funded, armed rebels. I wouldn't invest in any Idlib real estate in the near future. If there is to be stability in Syria, it is via Assad, and all rebels need to become part of the solution or get used to dirt naps. This is another war who's flames have been fanned by US policy. Just wanna' make one thump their chest with pride, don't ya' know?

The su-25 frogfoot is an extremely easy plane to shoot down due to it's role, it serves the same role as americas a-10 warthog which means it flys in low into hostile areas for it's strikes due to it's cas role. The a-10 is better armored but the su-25 is faster, the a-10 has had less shot down but has also been in more primitive conflicts, being more su-25s were shot down in afghanistan by stinger missiles, which were given to them by the united states to combat russian occuptation, while a-10 warthogs have never had to face equivilent situations, usually at most the rpg-7.

Either way both planes being cas fly missions where it is easy to take them down, even to primitive anti aircraft systems military grade or improvised, so an su-25 being downed should not be a surprise to anyone.

Su-25 "06" blue - RF-95486 was apparently shot down by a MANPAD fielded by the Syrian HTS group as the jet attacked the opposition-held town of Saraqeb. HTS split from al-Qaeda in 2017. According to the rebels, the Russian pilot ejected before the jet crashed. He was located by rebels and was killed in a gunfight. A Russian portal (@CITeam_en) has a [rebel uploaded] picture of his corpse.

As part of a vicious reprisal for their downed jet, Russia bombed civilian targets in a dozen towns. Below, a Russian Su-34 destroyed the surgical hospital in Kafr Nabl, killing medical staff and patients.....

Russian media reports that the downed pilot killed himself with a grenade rather than be captured. However, the photo of his corpse that I saw did not indicate this.

Unless the grenade detonated far from his body and he was killed by the shraphnel, that's bull****. Looks pretty clearly he was shot and killed.

Are you talking about this incident or of the past when the Turks shot down an Su-27 Flanker? This shoot-down seems to be the work of Syrian rebels by all reports and not the work of the Turks.

According to the Islamist group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) that claimed credit for shooting down the Russian Su-25SM jet in Syria's Idlib province (Tell Debes), the above articles were found on the dead Rusian pilot. The documents above correctly identify the pilot as 33yo RFAF Maj. Roman "Grach" Filipov (born in Voronezh but living in Vladivostok). According to my sources, Maj. Filipov and his aircraft were recently based at the Belbek airfield in occupied Crimea. There doesn't appear to be any bloodstains on the items above. Among the personal belongings is a short-form military identity card, two military pass requests, a transport card "Troika", and discount cards of the Far Eastern chain stores Hyperavto and Wine Studio. The long piece of white paper on the bottom right seems to be the code numbers for different airports/airfields in Syria. Maj. Filipov was reportedly flying at 4,000 metres (13,123ft) when he was hit, and the jet crashed nearby. Filipov remained in radio contact with the Russian airbase in Khmeimim, Syria, and reported shooting and killing two jihadist fighters with his hand gun as they closed in on him. He reportedly committed suicide with a grenade. The HTS Islamist's say they burned his body. Russian sources say Turkey has acted as a mediator and Filipov's charred corpse will be flown to Moscow via military aircraft. He leaves behind a wife and 4yo daughter.

Say what you want about the Russians and their government, but it takes some major stonage to fly a Frogfoot into that AOB. There must be a manpad for every swingin' Charlie in those villes. I say the same for Rep McSally--might not like her politics, but she has more than earned my respect flying that A-10 in the SWA.

As for Maj Filipov--Rest in Peace my friend, you've earned it.

Guess all I can say is that it's sad this guys 4 year old daughter will grow up without her father.

Biggest airstrikes in a year hit Syria after rebels shoot down Russian jet

The Russians regularly bomb first responders (the White Helmets), schools, hospitals and clinics. They use banned thermite incendiary cluster munitions, and fuel-air thermobaric bombs on civilian populations.
