It's what Lewis, a combat controller assigned to the 23rd Special Tactics Squadron, Hurlburt Field, Florida, remembers as he jumped on the back of his team's gun truck, exposed to Islamic State fighters' enemy fire just outside Mosul on Oct. 20, 2016. Since the truck's .50-caliber machine gun jammed, someone had to operate it. Lewis did just that while calling in airstrikes that would rain down bombs within 400 meters of his team's position.

Lewis on Friday was awarded the Silver Star for his actions while engaged in the 10-hour long firefight during the Mosul offensive under Operation Inherent Resolve. Lewis, a Joint Terminal Attack Controller who was featured in the Air Force's 2017 "Portraits in Courage" program, was embedded with a Navy SEAL team alongside Kurdish Peshmerga forces for the mission.

"We're reminded that heroes walk amongst us," Lt Gen Brad Webb, commander of Air Force Special Operations Command, said during Lewis's ceremony at Hurlburt.
Nothing for me to add as his actions and bravery speak to it.

JANFU:

A very impressive set of accomplishments in one ten-hour period. From destroying an IED suicide vehicle attack, to rescuing and evacuating wounded from an improvised minefield, to providing covering fire all the while doing these things while also calling in air strikes and medi-vac flights. He certainly earned his honours that day. Purpose and adaptability in fearsome harmony.

Cheers.

Evening ER
Yes, he and others did.

Thank you General Webb. Yes, from time to time we are also reminded that traitors walk amongst us. Indeed, traitors and enemies of the US Constitution of the domestic variety seem to be particularly concentrated inside the Beltway.

It's good to see a few good airmen walking amongst us too.

Can you not ever give you CT anti American BS a rest. You don't need to bring your garbage into every thread.

You should add the highly salient, the really important part, that he was taking part in the supreme war crime, the illegal invasion of a sovereign nation. An illegal invasion that was all based on lies lies and more lies.

Here is what I think- He is a soldier- soldiers follow legal orders- whether you agree or not, you have the right to condemn this at the ballot box, writing your Reps, demonstrating and other such efforts.

ISIL is plain evil, and everyone they kill saves lives. Attacking him for saving others soldiers lives is just plain ffn ignorant.

Soldiers are not required to follow into or commit war crimes. The US's orders were no more legal than Hilter's orders to illegally invade. An illegal invasion of a sovereign nation is the ultimate war crime. This was defined, almost exclusively, by the USA at the Nuremberg War Crimes tribunals.

What ISIL actually is is not something that you are in a position to decide. Their purported actions are described only by the actual war criminals themselves, the USA. Even if their actions are being described accurately, they are only similar in nature to myriad US actions against Native Americans, Mexicans, Filipinos, Nicaraguans, Vietnamese, Cambodians, Chileans, Indonesians, East Timorese, ... .

And actually, I am not attacking him. That's just the go to propagandist meme for these situations.

As a former JTAC myself, It's great to see my kind getting recognized for their heroism. It's interesting to see a CCT also be a JTAC.
I am not familiar with US Military terms- CCT and how it relates to JTAC??
I know he calls in air support,do they also coordinate artillery fire on targets?

I was TACP 1c4x1 our job was Close air support, putting bombs on targets, etc.. We often got assigned to US Army and SOF units to provide such through the JTAC role.

CCT are combat control teams, basically the navy seals of the USAF, their prime mission is to jump into and behind enemy lines to set up a forward operating airfield. 1c2x1. They are air traffic controllers, commandos, etc. CAS is usually not in their wheelhouse, at least it wasn't when I was in.

edit to add to answer your question, not artillery, air assets.

ISIS has videotaped and filmed their war crimes. They documented the burning and beheading of people. Their war crimes are attested to by a wide range of nations and peoples...

Why lie?

Disgraceful post..

You think that telling the truth is "disgraceful"? Not in my world, and I suspect not in the world of other honorable folks. Bush/Cheney/... all lied their asses off about both I & A.

The illegal invasions of I & A were war crimes, the same class of war crimes that saw WWII war criminals hung.

Still there are folks who believe, or pretend to believe that OBL had any involvement in 911. He didn't. So the US concocted a fable about 19 Arab hijackers but no OBL, and the myriad other total impossibilities of US governments' conspiracy theory says it is the biggest lie ever told.

You still haven't read the FBI investigation into OBL and 911 I see. Nor can you comprehend the 9/11 Commission Report. Never mind actually trying to comprehend the NIST.

Disgraceful post..

In a time of universal deception, speaking the truth is a radical act, perhaps in the eyes of some a disgraceful act.

That's how many described Daniel Ellsberg (yes I just saw The Post a few nights ago), but it turned out Ellsberg was doing the right thing in exposing the crimes of the federal government.

Why do they lie? To fool people who are easily fooled, duh!

The Iraq war was wrong. To denigrate the honors this Airman achieved in this thread is in poor taste.

What does that have to do with this Airman honorably serving his country? take your conspiracy theories and pound sand, no one is interested.

I'll give you that Reverend, and I appreciate your candor regarding the morality of the invasion of Iraq.

That said, I don't think the other post was so much a denigration of the airman's actions as it was an effort to keep things in perspective.
