What is the point of a modern combat handgun? Why not glocks?

Trigger "safeties" suck. Glocks are ****.

My sister-in-law works for a U.S. government agency in VA. She has a Walther PPK & she knows a lot about handguns. While I'm not personally familiar with the Glock, she told me that they are the standard issue pistol for CIA field (covert) people. According to her, the Glock lacks a mechanical safety. I also understand that as a result of this self-inflicted gunshot incidents have happened in that Company. Issuing the Glock to the military might produce similar casualties.

Had another one of these discussions. And I still can’t understand why a Glock is bad. So maybe we can boil this down. What is the purpose of a military issued combat handgun? What does it need to do? How will it be used?

Glock is not bad.

In essence , in the bidding process and the requirements -- Sig thought they had the FBI contract. Glock modified their handgun ( no finger groves , dual slide stops and ect ) to meet FBI requirements.

The FBI was already using the Glock 40 caliber , so when Glock modified their handguns to meet the new FBI requirements - the Feds picked Glock. Sig Sauer was disgusted, hurt and ticked.

Sig lost out on the FBI contract.....hurt feelings , feel sorry --- so "Big Army" picked Sig for the next handgun contract. Politics. Pure and simple politics.

Battlefield reports...do away with the 9mm. I was sure the Military was going to go back to the .45 ACP ( Sig P220 ) and go with the big bruin pistol. When I read that the new Sig 9mm won.........I was devastated. No Sig P229. No Sig P226. The 226 and 229 both proven in the field....especially the 226. But what do I know.

I served for eleven years. It is not about right and wrong, what is justified , nor what makes sense. It is all ......politics. Politics decides equipment, and sometimes policy. Just take it as it is.

I would have picked --- Sig P220 ( 45 ACP ) : Sig P226 ( 9mm ) : Sig P229 ( 9mm ) : H&K P2000 ( 9mm ). NEVER the 320.

The 9mm does make sense in some regards...but as a caliber in FMJ...I don’t think it performs very well (and thus the reputation it has).
