How many aircraft carriers does the US have?

The U.S. Navy operates 19 ships that could be called aircraft carriers, but only considers 10 to be actual carriers. Last week the U.S. Navy accepted USS America, first of the America-class amphibious assault ships, into service.Apr 16, 2014

The Ford is the lead ship of new class of aircraft carriers, the first new variant since the Nimitz-class was introduced in 1975. Construction began on theFord in 2005 and the ship was christened in 2013. As it currently stands the carrier will be the most expensive warship the United States has ever built.Jul 22, 2017

Russia's Only Aircraft Carrier Is Doomed

Russia’s only aircraft carrier, the aging Admiral Kuznetsov, is in big trouble.
This week, a Russian-language report in Interfax disclosed that Russia has cut in half funding for repairing and modernization its aircraft carrier. “Instead of [the] previously planned approximately 50 billion rubles [$867 million] for the work, it is planned to allocate about half of the previously announced amount,” Interfaxreported, citing a source “familiar” with the situation.

China has launched a new aircraft carrier in the latest sign of its growing military strength.
It is the country's second aircraft carrier, after the Liaoning, and the first to be made domestically.
The as-yet unnamed ship was transferred into the water in the north-eastern port of Dalian, state media said. It will reportedly be operational by 2020.
It comes amid heated rhetoric between the US and North Korea and ongoing tensions in the South China Sea.

and yet we hear of how the military has been depleted under Democratic rule....

How many aircraft carriers do we need, when China has two and Russia is about to have none at all?

Just wondering, just like I wonder whether we really need to spend so much on the military. What do you think?

It is an incredible waste of money

Decisions on large ticket items like CVs, LPHs, munitions, etc. can take years or decades to impact the military.

Example.... Carter era munitions cuts impacted Marine training well into Reagans term. And training munitions are normally simple to manufacture.

Time will tell.

The purpose of aircraft carriers is not to counter other aircraft carriers. The primary role of carriers is to project force far ahead of what others can do. To give an example from my own time on a carrier, when Iraq invaded Kuwait, we were able to get on station and inreach of Iraq in less than a week. That was 2 fighter squadrons(22 planes, f-14s), 2 squadrons of strike aircraft(22 planes, F-18), 2 squadrons of attack aircraft(22 planes I think, A-6s), plus support aircraft. That can put alot of ordnance on target with relative safety from air attacks.

The carrier lives to be forward deployed to react quickly where ever needed, and to arrive there with significant firepower. AS we can see now, when there are potential threats in Asian and the Middle East, plus a need to keep force in the European, African, and the rest of Asia, multiple carriers are a good thing. And as we do not want to overdeploy our forces(which ruins retention and operational readiness), that means having about 3 times as many as you need to cover operational commitments.

And lastly, if a big shooting war does happen, carriers are going to play a big part in US strategy. With the lead time to build a carrier being several years, it pays to have them ready when the **** hits the fan.

It's pretty much the US Navy alone which guarantees the safety of shipping on the high seas. No one else can do it. More than that, there's no one else you'd want to do it.

I understand that the liberals always want to cut the military. On the other hand the Democrats have wanted President Trump to send air craft carriers to Puerto Rico to help with the relief.

A group of 145 House Democrats said Wednesday the Defense Department response to the disaster in Puerto Rico has been inadequate and they urged President Trump to send an aircraft carrier to help relieve the territory's suffering residents.

He won't be sending ten of them

Oh no, that's not how it works. See, We cut the same amount from welfare as you get in cuts from the DoD. Same time.

Ok. Which kids do you want to cut off first?

Ok. Which kids do you want to cut off first?

Ah yes, throw the kids into. You don't give a damn about military dependents. You want to cut DoD budget at every turn. Of course, keep in mind a lot of those building the aircraft carriers, they are good old union boys. You know, Democrat voters. Call them up, let them know you want to put them out of work.

So it's a jobs program? So which kids get cut off first?

No, it's not a jobs program. The US Navy is our front line of defense. And bed wetting liberals have been trying to cut the DoD for decades. They just don't understand why they are losing seats at state level, and have lost the House, Senate, and White House. Get the message.

The Federal governments prime responsibility is to defend the United States and it's citizens.
You can't spend to much money doing that major task.

That's nice. So which kids?

So you would be in favor of 20 carriers?

I would inquire if 20 carriers was something that we need and what the benefit would be to the country.
Maybe it would be a good thing or maybe the money could be better spent elsewhere. More aircraft or.......

Make your case for ten carriers.....we don't need them

Safety and security is a waste of money and not our job? Are you sure you want to go with that argument?

Yes. Why can Russia manage to get by with just one?

He won't be sending ten of them

But to send one requires having one available, which means having several. One in refit, one deployed, one recovering from deployment...
