Four dead Americans in Africa: Why hasn’t this act of terror drawn the same feverish scrutiny as Benghazi?

That's Right ... Four dead Americans.

It’s been five years since terrorists attacked the U.S. consulate in Benghazi, Libya, on Sept. 11, 2012, leaving four Americans dead. Last week, as CIA officers disguised in wigs and mustaches testified in court about the predawn ambush on the diplomatic compound, four other American soldiers were killed in neighboring Niger.

Most Americans may not even be aware that approximately 800 U.S. troops are stationed in Niger, a West African nation where jihadist groups have taken root. As part of the never-ending war on terror, the United States has also set up a drone base in Niger’s capital city of Niamey. Contrary to his focused commitment to reverse every policy put in place by his predecessor, President Donald Trump has decided to carry on with the construction of a second drone base in Niger commissioned by Barack Obama.

American forces have never been sanctioned to an official combat mission in Niger, a landlocked West African nation about twice the size of Texas with a population of just over 20 million people. But they have long been fighting against Islamic extremists in the country and surrounding region. On Oct. 4, four Green Berets were killed and two more injured after their group of a dozen U.S. soldiers were ambushed while conducting a joint patrol with about 40 Nigerien soldiers.

The New York Times reported that when the soldiers were ambushed, no American helicopters came to their rescue. Although Congress has never authorized the mission in Niger -- as is required by the Constitution -- the military’s Africa command asked lawmakers for more help months before the attack, the Times also reported.

It remains unclear which terror group carried out the ambush, but there are reports that a new wing of the Islamic State that calls itself the Islamic State in Greater Sahara (ISIS-GS) had a hand in the deaths of the Special Forces troops -- the first U.S. casualties in Niger.

Perhaps he didn't want to politicize the deaths unlike you.

Just think. Trump takes the high road and you have to look up to see the soles of his feet.

BTW - Is the State Department lying about the reason the attacks occured?

WTF are we even doing in Africa?

This...like...Benghazi...

Hmmm......

Well...was this foresee in advance? Did the other governments all see what was coming in advance and split like they did in Benghazi? Did the people in Niger ask for...beg for reinforcements and support because they knew what was coming/ Were they ignored and left in place to die? After the attack did the government lie about the event and spend 2 weeks spinning lie after lie after lie about who the attackers were and the cause of the attack?

I take it from the article that what they are really upset about is that Trump hasnt un****ed the African situation caused by Obama fast enough. Is that what this is all about?

Well, your source and your presentation are inaccuate to the point of being dishonest.

Benghazi: Unarmed Diplomats. Niger: Soldiers.

Benghazi: No response for 13 hours. Niger immediate response with "fast movers" and "helicopters".

Facts are an important set of things to employ in reporting news. This is a fact that seems to escape liberals in structuring their world view.

Mattis praised the quick response of the French and Niger support forces.

"The French pilots were overhead with fast movers with bombs on them ready to help, and helicopters were coming in behind," he said adding that Niger forces with French advisers also responded to the attack, which took place attack about 200 kilometers (120 miles) north of Niger's capital, Niamey.

The U.S. and Niger forces were leaving a meeting with tribal leaders when they were ambushed. There were about a dozen U.S. troops and a company of Niger forces, for a total of about 40 service members in the joint mission.

U.S. officials have described a chaotic assault in a densely wooded area, as 40-50 extremists in vehicles and on motorcycles fired rocket-propelled grenades and heavy machine guns at the patrol, setting off explosions and shattering windows. The soldiers got out of their trucks, returning fire and calling in support from the French aircraft.

You might have missed it, but it was the GOP who publicized Benghazi. As long as Cigar was against that publicization, he has plenty of standing to criticize the attention the GOP put on Benghazi as contrasted to the lack of attention it put here.

WTF are we even doing in Africa?

Helping various African regimes fight ISIS and other terrorist groups. I get that you like your African nations corrupt, brutal and left leaning, but the actual people in those countries aren't going to stand for it

I could provide you links, but I won’t. Just as many Africans were converted to Christianity, many are now being recruited to become Muslim and some of those are going jihad.

If we aren’t there, someone else is.

Regarding Benghazi, we’re talking neglect vs bad luck.

If I remember correctly it was the whole Obama damage control team out in force making certain that everybody knew that it was that movie that was responsible, not Nero and Cleo fiddling while Rome burned.

To date we still don't know exactly what happened, except that no defensive force was ever deployed.

1. The NYT has the body count at 3, not 4. Where'd the fourth KIA come from?

2. Were they on a patrol, or in a diplomatic compound? Your article contradicts itself. Or, is the thread title a lie?

Clear that up and we can continue.

I don't doubt your story because I read it elsewhere last week.

I was just wondering WTF we were doing in Africa. You "answered" my question. We are there doing missionary work, keeping the Africans Christians so the won't become muslims.

I think a strict interpretation of the US Constitution would show that to be an illegitimate mission, US troops doing missionary work.

No, we are not doing "missionary work". We are helping prop the governments of various African regimes up against terrorist groups like ISIS.
