The Canadian Armed Forces once again hold the title of world’s longest sniper kill after a special forces soldier hit an ISIL fighter from more than three-and-a-half kilometres away.

“The Canadian Special Operations Command can confirm that a member of the Joint Task Force 2 successfully hit a target from 3,540 metres,” said the Department of National Defence in a Thursday statement.

Furlong held the record until it was beaten by the Brits in 2009. His sniper rifle, a McMillan Tac-50, is now preserved at the Canadian War Museum, and Furlong now operates a marksmanship academy in Edmonton.

Read about this yesterday so I did some quick math. Now all of this will change slightly depending on the actual specs of the bullet he was using it this is pretty close. Time of flight for that bullet is right about 7.5 seconds. Let's say his rifle is a 1 moa rifle which is about as good as it gets with a 50 cal. That means at that distance the best a shooter can hope to do is put his round inside a 35 inch window. Where inside that window it actually hits he has zero control over. The average human torso is about 20 inches across. In order to account for the drop of the bullet drop the shooter needs to hold around 850 feet above the target.
That is an insane shot and I would be very interested in knowing how many rounds it took before he got s hit.

Iraq, Trudeau pulled the jets but not the troops.
I was in 3 PPCLI when the CO set up the snipers. Served with some of them.

You gotta ask yourself, when the USA has illegally invaded sovereign nations over 70 times since WWII, murdered tens of millions of innocents, stolen unimaginable wealth from the poor of the world, raped, murdered hundreds of thousands of children, supported the most vicious right wing dictators imaginable [always right wing], ... how could any of the propaganda we are fed be true?

When you take enough shots from a extremely safe position, luck is bound to be on your side.

I will take any Simo Häyhä, Liudmyla Mykhailivna Pavlychenko, or Carlos Hathcock before thinking about some modern sniper. They were up close and smelling the enemy.

I read that the Princess Pats were so well-trained that the American commander in Afghanistan used them as special forces, sometimes.

Thank you- I joined at 19, had quit school at 15 with grade 9 education. Had various jobs, and those went no where and I knew I was as well. Went in, signed up and came home and told my father. He asked why I did. I explained I did not know what I wanted to do in life, needed some time and this was for 5 years to find out what I wanted to do. Found out I loved it. Saw a lot of Canada, 6 years in Germany and I had a hell of a time.

Yes there were times where it sucked, but that is with anything you do in life.
Was in Germany when the wall came tumbling down. Tell my friends it was due to my beer drinking that caused the wall to fall.

Yep- US troops on the ground saw the value of snipers as they say, up close and personal.
Saved a lot of troops.

Most of these insane shots involve a good bit of luck and a major amount of skill.

I'm also curious as to the number of attempts made. I remember the longest USA sniper shot involved several attempts.
