Canadian sniper makes history by killing ISIL insurgent from more than 3.5 kilometres

Re: Canadian sniper makes history by killing ISIL insurgent from more than 3.5 kilome

Most of these insane shots involve a good bit of luck and a major amount of skill.

I'm also curious as to the number of attempts made. I remember the longest USA sniper shot involved several attempts.

Just having the opportunity to set up for a target that far away is extremely lucky. Most snipers won't ever even get the chance. Being able to positively id a target at that range and then have the target hold still long enough while you do the math and take shot and then for the bullet to get there is all pure luck.

The one video I saw of an actual sniper shot, I believe it was the US soldier on the list, the target stood there while the zeroing in shots hit around him. I never understood that.

Cool! :) Canada has turned out a good number of quality snipers...I was actually surprised when I looked at the number of entries in the upper rankings on Wikipedia. Not too shabby for such a small country. And here you probably thought all we were good for was manners, maple syrup, and decent beer! hehe

Hah! Anyone who thinks that never saw what happens next after the gloves land on the ice!

Decent beer?

All I've had from Canada is Molson, and moose head. And they were both meh.

Only too bad aircraft aren't always available, so that a rifle, apparently, was the only means of attacking a person more than two miles away. This shot was spectacular, but very rare--enemies at that distance do not need to worry much more about getting hit by a rifle bullet than getting hit by a meteorite. In contrast, this person--and any others who had been with him--would have been a sitting duck for aircraft guns.

Re: Canadian sniper makes history by killing ISIL insurgent from more than 3.5 kilome

Of course you do, JANFU, that is the cognitive dissonance that has hit you big time.

You gotta ask yourself, when the USA has illegally invaded sovereign nations over 70 times since WWII, murdered tens of millions of innocents, stolen unimaginable wealth from the poor of the world, raped, murdered hundreds of thousands of children, supported the most vicious right wing dictators imaginable [always right wing], ... how could any of the propaganda we are fed be true?

What are you going on about? JANFU is Canadian. This thread is about a Canadian sniper. I get that as Americans we have a tendency to think everything is about us , but it isn't.

Yeah...sorry about that... By far the bottom of the barrel. Canada's got some great beers, both on the craft brew side, and the more mainstream end. I worked for Labatt for a few years, and while I like a lot of different craft beers from different places in Canada, my go to is Labatt 50 (and to the Canadians and Americans in the know, that's right, I said it, Labatt 50, and I'm too young to retire by 25 years...hehe...), you'll usually find it in my fridge. But the whole Canadian beer is better than American beer thing is an old joke, I'd say, given some of the microbrews I've tried from down there, you guys have closed the gap in the last ten years or so. I mean, don't get me wrong, you have some truly awful mainstream beers...lol... But there's a lot of good stuff too.

My roommate always drank labatt blue....I haven't had that in a while, can't recall if it was any good.

It's funny, with the exception of England, most countries don't export their best beers. They export their worst, really.

Apparently, Budweiser is a big hit in Europe, lol. But they've never had yuingling. Sad, really.

I think good beer is the path to world peace. Well, good beer, and boobs.

Re: Canadian sniper makes history by killing ISIL insurgent from more than 3.5 kilome

Amazing shot.

U.S. made rifle, for what's it's worth.

They claim 0.5 MOA groups with match-grade ammunition, which I gather is pretty good.

I've heard .50 isn't thought of as accurate, but custom ammo can work wonders.

I'm no expert.

Blasphemy!:2mad: :2razz::mrgreen:

Seriously though, this kinda of an interesting story. I think the Canadian military is well trained, but somewhat under equipped.

That may apply for the Canadian military as a whole but not for JTF2. They are extremely well equipped.

I have heard of JTF2's effectiveness. Considering its Canada's elite anti terrorism unit, it makes sense they get more resources then regular units.

Crown royal is good but has a peculiar aftertaste.

Secret, too. That incident was weeks ago, and might be about to be reported by someone or the Defense Ministry might still not have released the story. Also, we'll probably never know the guy's name. Hell, Bush was giving them a Presidential citation at a time when the Canadian government was still not acknowledging that they were in Afghanistan.

Yeah. Have had the pleasure of working with them a couple times. Really good dudes. It always strikes me as to how similar the vast majority of SOF personal are no matter the country. Be it the US, Canada, Australia, Korea or any of the other highly trained militaries. We all tend to have a lot in common.

Re: Canadian sniper makes history by killing ISIL insurgent from more than 3.5 kilome

Here some of you are celebrating the death of a US ally. Such despicable backstabbers!

Ally?

Is Trump making friends with ISIS now?

You did understand that it was a Canadian who shot a terrorist right?

Re: Canadian sniper makes history by killing ISIL insurgent from more than 3.5 kilome

awesome...I know that Canadian soldiers are some of the toughest in the world...

we just don't need to say it.

and no one seems to notice

in the long run, that will be a good thing

by the way...........I have never said it but, thanks for your service...it is appreciated

I have friends that have served...they pay a price...I know that...so thank you

The Canadian Armed Forces is a small standing army with multiple roles. From combat to disaster relief, wilderness searches etc. It is known in NATO circles to have the most highly trained personnel of any of NATO's allies. All soldiers are trained in multiple disciplines or "specialties".

And you're right. It's rather un-Canadian to talk about it

I am sure you want to believe that but that doesn't make it true.

Re: Canadian sniper makes history by killing ISIL insurgent from more than 3.5 kilome

After reading many military unit war diaries and soldiers' personnel memoirs about WWII it became clear how much Allied commanders and soldiers hated enemy snipers and despised their methods. Yes, the Allied nations used them and with good effect but with the exception of the USSR snipers were seen as a necessary evil by the allies.

How things have changed over the last eighty years. Now snipers are seen as superstars and heroes, rather than a morally dubious but necessary military expedient. Perhaps we should remember the brutal reality of what they do rather than ghoulishly celebrating their skill. I don't know the peculiar circumstances of this record breaking shot but I do know that a human being's life was ended by it. Perhaps the target was a vicious and brutal fanatic or perhaps he was an honest man defending his homeland from savage, foreign invaders. We don't know but we should consider that while we celebrate, toast success and pridefully wave flags. There were human beings at both ends of this record breaking shot and in some sense at both ends their lives have been diminished by this encounter. While this was a triumph of skill, it was also a tragedy of the human condition. So while I will acknowledge the shooter's skill, I will not celebrate the death of this unaware fighter on a distant battlefield in a land we have no business ravaging.

Complete and utter garbage.

What this was, was a worthless pile of crap being removed from this world so he can no longer hurt anyone else or force his BS interpretation of Islam on his fellow man. In a small way the world is better off without him. And trust me the life of the Canadian sniper is not diminished at all. I have no doubt he removed plenty of price of crap humans before this shot and hopefully he will remove plenty more. I doubt he will lose any more sleep over this then he does when he takes the garbage to the curb. Because that is what he did.

I am sorry that you are to blinded your nonsense to see Isis for the scourge that they are and that anything we can do to remove that scourge makes the world a better place. You should try living in the real world.
