USS Fitzgerald involved in collision with merchant vessel | Daily Mail Online

Seven US Sailors are missing after the a US Navy destroyer collided with a 21,000 ton cargo ship 56 miles off the coast of Japan.

The guided missile destroyer USS Fitzgerald suffered severe damage when the container ship ACX Crystal – which is almost three times the size of the naval vessel – plowed into it at 2.30am local time.

Aerial footage shows the crushed exterior of the 9,000 ton $1.5billion destroyer which is commanded by Commander Bryce Benson, who took over in May and was reportedly injured in the accident, according to the Navy Times.

I'm not a Navy guy but my understanding is that ships are supposed to pass port side to port side. Since the can has damage on the starboard I'm pretty sure she is the one who was at fault.

Didn't the Andrea Doria-Stockholm collision occur because they misunderstood the nautical rules of the road?
 
What is it with our Navy constantly hitting things now?

Did they forget how to do this?



Note: I have been saying for about three years that Obama/Congress completely wrecked the Navy...all the services are bad but the Navy is the worst.

Couldn't tell you. I'm about as far from a Naval historian as you will find but a quick Wiki check cites maneuver issues as well as dense fog.

It's not impossible. It's important to remember that with each advance in technology comes an additional layer of moving parts, each bit made and designed by imperfect human beings, and each of those moving parts can break. That's not an argument against technology mind you, technology advances and is developed for a reason; because it makes like better, or faster, or more efficient/effective. So while in theory this should never happen, all it takes is one or two errors in a bit of software or one damaged bit in the hardware to break the whole thing.

And lastly, you cannot rule out human error. I know it's a common perception that the armed forces is made up entirely of professionals, but speaking from experience we are not any less likely to make mistakes or **** up than the general populace.


The best we can hope for right now is that the root cause of this tragedy is identified and the proper rectifications can be made to ensure that it never happens again.

Talking about the crap state of our military is public service.

Do you know that Army small unit training is now so bad that we get slaughtered in drills by EU nations?

This should concern you.

I have a son on his way to the 101st Airborne as an officer, it sure as hell concerns me!

I'll wait for some Navy guys to set you straight....This is the same Navy that just had a sailor hide on his own ship for a week and they could not find him, no one talked...... the Navy has huge problems, and they start at the top.

Now? The navy was hitting things before I joined, it hit things while I was in, and it has continued to hit things since I got out. This is nothing new. Thousands of opportunities to hit things every month, combined with complex systems and human error, plus lots of chances means that sometimes **** happens.

Good for them. Tell me, how many European nations field entire air fleets full of refueling aircraft, hundreds of strategic air lifters, more destroyers than most navies, and tens of thousands of armored fighting vehicles?

The strength of the US Armed Forces has never been the quality of our personnel. It has always been our logistical superiority and our ability to rapidly train, deploy and field vast armies of technological uniformity with massive amounts of firepower.

It doesn't, because I know wars are won by logistics, industry, numbers and operational capability, not because one for one our troops are the best in the world. If we were a small European state of less than 10 million people I would want our troops to be the best trained in the world, but we aren't; we're the god damn US of A with a population of 325,000,000 and are the economic powerhouse of this world.
