So does anyone have any insight into what this is? I'm curious. I do a lot of travel along the gulf coast because of family. I was in a small pizza shop and the owner had this. After a bit of pondering the only things I could think of (because this was found in an area that was used as a bombing range and strafing area for army air corps and navy I believe) was that this was either a bomb or a mortar round. It obviously is small. And it looked like the end had something for a fuze or something.

I just don't know what it is and I can't find it on google. But I think I'm getting closer. I just don't know exactly what it is. Maybe one of the older military men here may have seen this before.

After a bit more review and a bit of reviewing and rolling it over in my hand I found what it is, and I have to say I was pretty close. It looked like a bomb too me, and the guy was fairly certain it was a bomb. It was too small to be of much use, BUT...it was for practice which makes sense. It had a pin and marker and everything.

Is there a hole bored through nose to tail and roughly an inch or so across?

If so a smoke cartridge goes in there and it will release a hell of a smoke cloud.

Our practice bombs were 25 lbs .

Yep. Was for a 10 gauge shotgun shell (a big one).

EDIT: Ah, wait. does that say Mark 23 or 28 on the side? I found that image for a five inch naval gun that was a Mark 28. You said it was along the coast so the naval gun sounded feasible.

I thought 28 first as well. But the island it was found on was an old bombing range. So it is definitely a 23. We used to find bullets out there when I was a kid. Man I wish I could go back and look for more.

Ever have any weird illnesses? :/ I don't know that a bombing range is the cleanest place for kids. But I would've been out there myself sure as hell.

No. Well I did have this 5th nipple and it doesn't lactate anymore. So no. Nothing that normal people don't deal with.
