China Tests Missile With 10 Warheads

China flight tested a new variant of a long-range missile with 10 warheads in what defense officials say represents a dramatic shift in Beijing's strategic nuclear posture.
The flight test of the DF-5C missile was carried out earlier this month using 10 multiple independently targetable reentry vehicles, or MIRVs. The test of the inert warheads was monitored closely by U.S. intelligence agencies, said two officials familiar with reports of the missile test.
The missile was fired from the Taiyuan Space Launch Center in central China and flew to an impact range in the western Chinese desert.
Pentagon is concerned, and may likely push to increase our warhead number if the number of 800-1000 warheads for the Chinese is accepted.

Time to start pushing hard for an expedited SDI program. We need to be able to knock down a lot of warheads to help push the Chinese costs for deployment. We will also have to up our active warhead numbers to help with the MAD deterrence.

People who think that we'll ever be in a nuclear are dumb. While there may be another nuclear strike by a rogue nation, there won't be a full-blown nuclear exchange between nations. If China or NK ever did nuke an American city, the response wouldn't be a massive launch of nukes but rather a tactical strike designed to cripple the attacking nation. Hit the Seven Gorges with a nuke and China is so thoroughly screwed that there's no realistic way they could recover. Nuke their blue water fleet and they are done. No one would ever launch a major nuclear strike against, because the repercussions of our response are the compete destruction of that nation. It's kind of like walking up to a half-dozen trained attack dogs and kicking one of them. Yes, you kicked a killing machine, but now that killing machine and his friends are going to be crapping you all over the neighbor's yard for the next week.

All we need do is have enough bombs to destroy all human life and the obvious will to unleash them on the baddies, when they attack. The problem sets in, when they attack.

You sure have a lot of faith in the human condition. I'd like to think our guys would have a conscience but, i don't know if the rest of the world does.

I think self preservation is a far stronger instinct, than a good conscience.

In the past you would of blamed this on Obama for being "weak"..... Why no blame to go ol poppa Trump?

Because the blame rests with Bill Clinton who allowed them to have the technology in the first place. Place blame where it deserves. Obama has done so much stupid **** there is no need to invent more.

That is a bit worrisome.

Depending on who you ask, some sources say Bill Clinton's relaxation of some tech-export rules paved the way for the miniaturization of Chinese warheads in this manner.

I thought that MIRVs were banned by treaty? Or was that just between Russia and the US? (Or perhaps not at all)

They were going to miniaturize them with or without our "help". We need to begin to neutralize their import and effect. That begins with making sure we have enough numbers of our own warheads on hand and ready so there are enough that can survive a first strike. Then begin a REAL SDI program to really neutralize the effects of multi warhead missiles, of such effectiveness that they must resort to saturation tactics to overwhelm and defeat such a system. By having a sword and shield it makes China's potential decision to use nuclear weapons a throw of the dice and potentially catastrophic and any "victory" pyric at best.

From your mouth to Mattis' ear. :)

FOBS Fractional Orbital Bombardment System were banned by treaty under SALT II. Basically think kinetic bombardment with nuclear warheads. The warheads are lofted into space prior to use by up to several years, then when needed they drop out of orbit onto their target. There is no boost phase so they are very difficult to detect even if you know what and where they are. MIRV's are simply multiple warheads mounted onto a bus (the carriage for the warhead re-entry vehicles into Low Earth Orbit on top of a missile) which is lofted toward the target and then the warheads are released and each has a different target usually. They are still legal by treaty but we rarely use them anymore. At that I am aware of.

Why are you talking blame, and why a Prez that's been in office 2 weeks?

Big deal.

So the Chinese have 10 MIRV's per missile...it's old technology.

Anyone who cares about weapons that no one will ever dare use is worrying over nothing.

This is mildly interesting but totally irrelevant.

When the Chinese develop missiles that are invisible to radar from launch to target or can travel at the speed on light...than I will worry.
Until than...'been there, done that'.

I believe most or all of the Trident missiles carried in submarines are fitted with multiple warheads. That means a hundred or more hydrogen bombs, each of 100 to as much as 475 kilotons, and each deliverable to a different target, are moving around underwater on a single vessel. On any given day, a number of those subs are at sea. Because the Tridents have a range of at least 4,500 miles, the expanse of ocean within which they can be launched and still reach their targets is enormous. Neither China nor any other adversary can locate these ballistic missile submarines accurately enough to be able to destroy them before they could launch their weapons.
