Air Force investing $12B in F-15s - CNNPolitics.com

Not sure if this is an admission that the F35 program has hit a wall or if the Defense department has realized that the most advances fighters are perhaps too advanced to perform their missions well due to technical problems.

The really sad thing is that $12 billion put into the F-15 is going to get us the same bang as $200+ billion of F-35's.....but till they found themselves with a F-35 not ready and getting outgunned by the China/Russia team we never considered upgrading the F-15.

This is a story about how the DC ELITE cant make good decisions.

the f-15 silent eagle is a good stop-gap measure until we finally get the f-35 fully operational. we will work the bugs out of the f-35, and the LCS, and other stumbling programs, it will just take some time.

as for being 'outgunned' by china/russia....that's a joke. we've had F-22s in the air since '95. china/russia..have nothing comparable in the air...in 2016.

And billions upon billions of more money.

the F35 will cost $1.4T if carried out to completion. It's already obsolete (and a ****ty design). Reasonable people know that drones are the way to go.

So do I. Stop feeding failed liberal policies. And stop throwing good money after bad.

the f-35 clearly has problems, but i don't think we should just discard it. make it a more limited run like the f-22, and move on to, as rico said above, expanding the drone fleet. also, one reason we cant simply stop throwing money at the f-35 is all the international orders, if we de-fund the program now there's going to be a lot of P/O'd US allies.

I'd rather they cancelled the F-35A (air force variant), re-started the F-22 production line and built more F-22's.

If you limit the run, the per unit cost will skyrocket as you have to pay off the massive development costs over less airframes...just as it did with the F-22 and the B-2.

Drones are fine and dandy, but they can NOT be used to exclusivity and work nearly as well. Drones work well in tandem with other systems. Any drones used will have to be fully automated or controlled line of sight or close to line of sight for reason od decision lag. Each has their own unique pitfalls.

Or start up an updated F-23 line. The tooling is still around. Both will have to have updates, which take time and money.

The upgrade appears to apply to F-15C and D models which were originally programmed to be replaced by the F-22. Since that isn't going to happen they get to slog it out until 2040. It has nothing to do with F-35.
