Backing down only makes it more likely China will try it again further down the road.

Never said anything about backing down. Give this time to play out. 1 thing is, if you go looking for a fight, you always find it.

When the options are "let the Chinese have the South China Sea" and "don't do that" there's not much room to play things out.

The Chinese don't seem very interested in negotiating.

As I mentioned, we will see. Far to many are in a rush to a war.
