John Basilone

He deserves credit for the gamble at Inchon - I will give him that.

Bzzzzt, wrong answer. Inchon worked, but only because part of the newer mines did not make it there in time. If NK had had the mines(as they would have but for a chance), Inchon would have failed miserably. Chech out what happened every time he tried to reprise Inchon. Also note that in rushing to Seoul before the marines(I think there was a chesty guy you might have heard of with them), they forgot the primary purpose of a landing up the coast, which is to cut off and trap the enemy.

Without the relative happy ending I bet.

Just really started getting into the pacific conflict and I have to say I was caught of guard by how brutal it was compared to Europe. Sure D-day, market garden, the bulge etc were no picnic but they got some rest bite. The battles on some of those islands went on for weeks and the horror seemed so constant. The enemy ruthless, conditions horrific etc. Really gave me a whole new level of respect for the US marines.

Im currently reading Eugene Sledge's book With The Old Breed which I stumbled upon in a used bookstore and snapped it up, excellent stuff so far. He participated in the battle of Peleleui and Okinawa and is also featured in the HBO series The Pacific.

Do you think the majority of the Philippines was a tatical error? That after canal they should of focused directly on the Japenese islands?

After you're done read a " quartered safe out here" memoir from a British soldier in Burma, haunting stuff.

Good question, and I don't have a good answer. To be honest, I do not know enough to judge. Cpwill might have a better answer.

The book adaptation of The Pacific is worth reading. Follows a couple guys who where not in the HBO series, including a pilot whose story was fascinating. Sorry I can't be less general, but all my books are still boxed up.

Very much a Band of Brothers type series. A lot of the same people involved. Well worth watching.

Me and the wife watched a few episodes tonight. Really great show and they capture the sheer brutality of the conflict, similar to BOB but different in a lot of ways as well. Conditions they faced were crazy.
Small detail but I was blown away about the rope wall they had to climb to get back on the ships. Malnourished, tired, mentally drained and they have to climb to get back on the ship.
