China warns US after Navy ship passes disputed islands claimed by Beijing | Fox News

China's Foreign Ministry reacted angrily Tuesday after a U.S. Navy ship passed within 12 nautical miles of disputed islands in the South China Sea late Monday in an apparent challenge to Beijing's territorial claims in the region.

The ministry said that authorities monitored and warned the guided missile destroyer USS Lassen as it moved inside what China claims as a 12-mile territorial limit around Subi Reef in the Spratly Islands archipelago, a disputed group of hundreds of reefs, islets, atolls and islands in the South China Sea that is also claimed by the Philippines.

A defense official told the Associated Press the patrol was approved by the White House and took place without incident.

"The actions of the U.S. warship have threatened China's sovereignty and security interests, jeopardized the safety of personnel and facilities on the reefs, and damaged regional peace and stability," the ministry said on its website. "The Chinese side expresses its strong dissatisfaction and resolute opposition."
I say **** China, they want to play bluewater Navy games with the big boys, they need to put on their big boy pants. The US has always assured free navigation in International waters, and needs to continue that role.

I see potential disaster, especially between two nations that are economically linked at the hip. But that usually does not matter to those who seem to be in a perpetual state of looking for conflict.

Of course this could all be nothing more than gorilla chest pounding.

You know I was wrong, I think Obama should apologize to China.

I quite agree (which I think is a first between you and me). It's a hard call, especially given that the last thing we need is to get into a cold war with China, but we have to remind the Chinese that no, they cannot declare sovereignty past a twelve-mile limit.

Agreed. Maintaining navigable international waters is a national interest.

This conflict isn't going anywhere, other than Naval exercises and a bit more posturing. It's inconceivable that this will escalate much beyond that.

I do believe the term 'posturing' comes to mind.

And they can't just build artificial islands and then claim everything around it. I don't like Obama's ME policy, but I like what he's doing here.

Again, I agree - it's wrong of China to build artificial islands and then claim everything around it. That said, it's sorta hard to say they can't own land when they pick a spot in international waters, dump enough dirt there to where it becomes an island, and then claim that island. I think that's probably a loophole that the Law of the Sea never addressed, that no one ever foresaw occurring.

So...frankly, I think that what we should do is start doing the same doggone thing, in the same area. China's not the only one who can play that game.

That would be Dragonball Z then.

Hey bud, if you're that paranoid you'll be getting trapped in the CT thread at the current rate in less than a year!

They do. Russian ships and aircraft routinely patrol and probe our littoral and airspace.

Thanks... True... I read up on some and also found this.

"Asked about the difference, a defense official told CNN that as a matter of policy, the U.S. does not challenge ships executing safe transit through U.S. territorial waters, in part to be consistent with its history of challenging other nation's excessive territorial claims."

Yeah? Then invite Russian and Chinese Navy's to sail around off the coast of New York.

Nope, they'll have to take that initiative on their own, and for the most part Russia does.

Actually, we are not as "joined at the hip" as you might think.

The main thing China is known and used for is essentially cheap labor. They are the modern version of Mexico post-NAFTRA, or Japan post-WWII.

However, unlike Japan, they are not an originator nation. Even before and after WWII, Japan was already known for it's electronics, industrial, and optics capabilities. Among camera buffs, some of the finest lenses in the world come from Germany and Japan. For a small nation, they were building ships and aircraft that were dominating the US in the early stages of the war. And they had created some highly sophisticated code machines that we largely broke through a combination of luck, and their own hubris that they were unbreakable.

Now these are actually advantages that China does not have. To begin with, they are not an "originator nation" when it comes to technology. Sure, they are making computer chips and GPS devices and cell phones, but notice who actually is designing these items. The US, Germany, Japan, and other countries. They are simply paying China to make them. Well, here is a news flash, before the mid 1990's, those same things were being made in other countries, and could easily move right back again in the future.

The relationship between the US (and other countries) and China is not correctly called "linked at the hip", it is more accurately "parasitic". The world provides China with the plans and raw materials, they manufacture the items (designed mostly by somebody else), then ship that finished produce for sale. It's only appeal to the consumers of the world is simply that it is cheap.

In the 1970's, Japanese Electronics took a giant leap, and quickly became the wonder of the world. Their ability of Muntzing led to a revolution, where less parts were needed to do the same thing. Their then acceptance of semiconductors (faster then the US did) caused them to leapfrog us again in things like pocket calculators. Sure, a US made HP calculator could do advanced mathmatics that before required a slide rule to do, but it cost $600. All most people needed was something to ballance a check book at a $50 price range.

And Japan could do that not because it copied what was made in other countries, but they actually designed their own items. Reducing the part count not because they lacked the technology to make the more expensive parts, but as a way to reduce cost, but only if it was not at the expense of quality.

The first US transistor radios required a now obsolete battery, the 22.5 volt Type 412. 2 years later a company soon to be renamed SONY released a new transistor radio, with the 9 volt battery we still use today. And their cameras and lenses were still revolutionary, even into the digital era.

China has none of that level of origination of ideas. If we cut them off (or they cut us off), it hurts our economy for a while as we look for new sources of labor. But it cripples them, as they have lost their #1 export destination and one of their major labor contractors.

And the main reason we stick with them is generally the prohibitive taxes involved in returning "overseas money" into the US.

Between his Dumbo ears.

and then you spoil our moment of bonding with another cheap shot at the President. Guess our moment has passed.

Dumbo ears? Pretty piss poor.

Hey, you were getting too friendly.

Yeah? Then invite Russian and Chinese Navy's to sail around off the coast of New York.

They do it routinely. Everybody does. The difference, of course, is that we just didn't suddenly create New York, located thousands of miles from the continental United States, and then tell everybody else to stay away.

Hmmmm.... Since we have this big problem with what to do with all of our garbage, maybe we can kill two birds with one stone. Let's start making garbage islands around China and claiming them as our own, since there would be lots of evidence of an American presence ther in the form McDonald's wrappers, old cell phones and CRT TVs, we would have a solid claim on the islands... :lamo

There's one thing I really hate about your reply - I can't argue with it!!!! Good reply! Dammit!
