[Illinois] I don’t know about you guys, but I’m liking JB Pritzker’s style.

JB has been handling this crisis very well.

And he’s practical, too!

How on Earth can any person with two working neurons to rub together consider liquor or marijuana "essential"? So now booze and dope peddlers are put on the same level of doctors, pharmacists and grocers? What bloody rot.

No one should risk further spread of this contagion for their short term pleasures. Drugs and drink that rot your lungs, brain and liver for a brief moment of numbness or ecstasy are not "essential" products nor are the jobs of those who provide these products.

Cannabis dispensaries serve some pretty ill people, and many liquor stores also have food and other beverages.

That is an argument for marijuana home delivery, not for a dispensary to remain open to the public. The people who actually need marijuana typically have compromised immune systems and should not be going out in the first place.

And as for liquor stores needing to remain open because they might have Doritos, candy bars and hot dogs rotating under a heatlamp for sale, I would have to see some evidence as to whether any given liquor store is also the main source of food for any given neighborhood or community. If they are, exemptions should be made. But if not, this is just broad special pleading for some unnecessary businesses to stay open to the public over others.

We either need to take this virus seriously and enforce the strictest social distancing standards and close as many vectors of its spread as possible beyond the bare essentials, or we may as well just say "To Hell with it!" and just let every business remain open and let everyone go back to work for all the arbitrary exceptions governors like Pritzker are making in order to provide bread and circuses to their constituencies.

In some neighborhoods in Chicago, liquor stores also serve as a functional convenience store.

Look up ‘food deserts’.

For those, exceptions should be made. But ALL liquor stores? ALL marijuana dispensaries? No. Order a shutdown of all of them, but give time and allow a clear process for those liquor stores which are indeed provably the only grocery store in their neighborhood to apply for an exemption.

Well! J.B.'s looking better to me all the time!

Moments ago during his press conference, he was asked about hospital supplies like masks, etc. He shocked me by replying that their general emergency preparedness plan call for stockpiling items such as hospital supplies, which they did as usual recourse. So for now, he thinks they're good!

Huh? I was amazed. Literally, amazed.

I was especially attune with his reply, because literally minutes before was Mike Pence's reply to the same question at the just prior Trump press conference:

[unfortunately the above quote is from the CNN live-updates thread, and it has no static link]

Notice one team having preparatory stockpiled for emergency preparedness, and the other team is "proud to announce" they are "ordering" masks! Geezus Krist!

The federal government has plenty of masks, but now they’re having to pick up the slack for states that didn’t stockpile. Those masks are going to places like Washington which spent money on a lot of useless bureaucracies and not important stuff like disaster preparedness.

I enjoyed J.B. calling out Trump about O'Hare.

He was right too. That was FUBAR.

What’s it’s Trump’s fault that O’Hare is a busy airport?

Sounds like pretty self serving politics to me.

Like I said before, they help ease the cabin fever.

That and people who rely on Medical Mary J think of it as "essential".

Boss Hogg is ****.

So, what do think the Federal government should do with the “stockpiled” masks? Can’t eat them.........:screwy

We shouldn’t hand them out no strings attached to states that didn’t prepare. The federal government has to account for the interests of the whole country, and also we have to maintain stockpiles in case another crisis emerges.

So they should get some of the stockpile, but the feds shouldn’t be draining the entire reserve to three states in the first few weeks. Ideally you would want to give out the bare minimum necessary until new production can take over

Because all the bars are closed.

And in any event It would be highly discriminatory that I can get liquor because the grocery stores sell it and states like IL (which I think is an ABC state) do not.

Plus it keeps people employed and taxes flowing.

Besides by that notion gun stores are not essential businesses, computer part stores are not essential businesses. You shouldn’t need to travel anyway so why are gas stations one? Plus the infrastructure that makes and distributes liquor really isn’t immediately convertible to other use.

I think all businesses where people do not gather inside should be permitted to operate to the extent possible. No reason to do more economic damage then necessary.

My rejoinder is that there are already grocery stores where you can purchase liquor. There is no need to make an ever-widening set of exemptions rendering this stay-in-place utterly useless.

Well the stay in place order is for all intents and purposes useless. It will only cause massive economic damage while not preventing new cases because the states have not articulated any coherent plan for where to go from here. In fact they’re only making things worse.

Prickster doesn't seem to understand that there are 49 other states that need medical stuff.

He most certainly does.

And that’s the reason the federal government needs to centralize control.

Because Illinois will outbid states that have incompetent governments, and it’s a bad thing when TN suffers because IL or NY are the first states to feel the larger effects. And the only ones who win are the people who are jacking up the prices of PPE in a bidding war.

Prickster is really pushing to see how much he can get away with regarding his COVID powers these days.

I forsee that tax-cheating donkey becoming "ex-governor" come 2023.

I can assure you, Illinois government is not competent.
