In a Homecoming Video Meant to Unite Campus, Almost Everyone Was White - The New York Times
In a Homecoming Video Meant to Unite Campus, Almost Everyone Was White
The video was created to show off the University of Wisconsin. Instead, it set off a furor, and a reckoning over what it means to be a black student on campus.
MADISON, Wis. — The video was just two minutes long: a sunny montage of life at the University of Wisconsin’s flagship campus in Madison. Here were hundreds of young men and women cheering at a football game, dancing in unison, riding bicycles in a sleek line, “throwing the W” for the camera, singing a cappella, leaping into a lake.
================================================================
It’s welcoming everyone into our home” according to the voiceover. But I didn't see any black, brown or oriental faces in the crowds of Madison students filmed.
According to percentage black enrollment university wisconsin madison - Google Search there are 5.58% Asian, 4.81% Hispanic or Latino, 2.91% Two or More Races, 2.25% Black or African American. My math may be a little rusty, but that's a significant portion of the student body, around 15%. But none apparently made those white bread & while milk video shoots.
Major research universities like UWI tend to have large Oriental student bodies because they are....smarter? More motivated? Both?
