Mother who warned authorities about her son taking gun to school now facing felony charge for neglect | TheHill

Mary York, an Indiana mother who last year notified authorities that her son was heading to school with a gun, turned herself in on charges of neglect and criminal recklessness.

NBC News reports York was charged last week in connection to an incident in December in which her son exchanged fire with police officers at his school before he killed himself.

Indiana is the most conservative state in our country. I've been to Indianoplace more often than I care to count. But something in this story doesn't make any sense. She turned him in & she still got charged after he killed himself?

Just because she is charged does not mean she will be convicted unless she enters a guilty plea of course. It is along the same logic of charging someone for a DUI if they let someone drunk borrow their car I suppose.

I recall a story years ago where a fella walking along saw a house on fire and ran in, saving a child. When the police arrived they arrested him for unpaid tickets.

Remember, "if you see something say nothing." That is the REAL legal standard.

Put yourself in her shoes for a moment: your kid apparently has issues with dealing with reality. He has a gun. He's heading to school, possibly to kill some people. Are you going to tustle with him to remove the gun from him & risk getting shot & killed yourself?

No her crime was allowing her gun to be used by a minor. Calling the police after you rob a bank does not make you innocent.

New york times adds a bit of information. It says that he was in a mental health institute, but the mother pulled him out because it was too expensive. And by the mother's testimony, the guns belonged to her boyfriend. If that's true, why is she being charged instead of her boyfriend who actually owned the guns?

Both should go to jail for murder. There is only one way to get parents to be responsible with guns and that is to put some of the offenders away. I'm tired of these totally preventable tragedies. If you murder someone while driving drunk they put you away but somehow being irresponsible with dangerous weapons is different when the weapons are guns. The 2nd amendment does not give you the right to kill your children.

Technically, the mentally ill boy was the offender while the mother informed police that he was about to shoot up a school.

Investigators say Brandon Clegg videotaped himself on Dec. 12 saying he was going to kill people at Dennis Middle School the next day. The videos reportedly show him breaking the lock of a gun cabinet and retrieving multiple firearms when his mom and her partner weren’t home.

Unless the investigators are a bunch of big fat liars, it can be presumed that the mother did not let him use the firearms.

That is what gun safes are for and she shouldn't even had guns in the house with a mentally ill child. . Leaving guns where children can get them is exactly that same as handing them to them. Lock her up.

But they weren't left where he could get them (at least he wasn't supposed to be able to get them). He broke into the gun cabinet. Maybe it's not quite as secure as a gun safe but it was supposed to stop him from getting it.

That's why you never keep guns in the home of a mental patient especially when they are teenage boys.. The fact that you did not know that is why we have so many of these preventable tragedies. It really is absurd.

If you're gonna downplay self defense cases for being rare, don't use mass shootings to push for more gun control. In 2018, only 373 people died from mass shootings.
How many mass shootings occurred in the US in 2018 - Business Insider

If you think that's a lot, 17,284 people were murdered in the US the year prior. I don't imagine there being a huge spike in 2018 so I think it's safe to conclude that mass shooting deaths make up a very small percentage of murders.

Her crime is being poor. She has been charged with criminal offenses because she could not afford medical care for her son. Thus, she needs to be imprisoned for her crime of not having enough money.

The number 1 home defense usage of firearms is scaring someone off with no one hurt and no crime to even report. It is only gun-haters who believe if they have a gun they MUST shoot SOMEONE - themselves, a family member or a criminal.

I agree that progressive Democrats who are suicidal and progressive Democrats who believe if they have a gun they MUST shoot someone with it should not have a gun. IF we eliminate illegal immigrants and Democrats from gun death totals, the US gun death rate would possibly be the lowest in the world.
