Lottery-winning couple in Michigan charged in string of robberies

Stephanie Harvell and Mitchell Arnswal won $500,000 in 2016 on the day they were served an eviction notice.

When a Michigan couple won $500,000 from a lottery scratch-off in 2016, they said they wanted to turn their life around. They apparently did, but in the wrong direction.

The couple, Stephanie Harvell, 28, and Mitchell Arnswald, were charged in a string of burglaries over the weekend, and police said they are suspected of breaking into several houses in the Bay County area in the last two months, often during the day while the homeowners were at work.

Only in America. Kids are not taught how to manage money in school.

This isn't a case of not knowing how to manage money. It's a case of stupidity and disregard for the law.

Goes to show you that kleptomania is a real disease.

To be fair, 500,000 is just not that much.

$500,000 isn't what it used to be.

Many dream about winning the big one but I seriously believe it would change me for the worst. But with the statistical odds of winning are about 1 in 175 million I don't believe I will every have to worry about that.

True. Depending on the particular lottery. a $500,000 ticket is worth around $200,000. After taxes maybe $150,000.

To those who never have seen $150K. It seems like a never ending windfall. So they spend accordingly.

This couple likely blew through their part of that $500K in a few weeks. Cars, vacations, jewelry. Doesn't take much. Sit & watch QVC all day.

It's nothing but a down payment on a house.

But people with a condition known as bipolar mania go off the deep end when money comes their way.

How to manage money isn't on the federally required student testing so why would it be taught - just like no one needs to learn civics, about the Constitution and Bill Of Rights, or American history?

Besides, if you ask the Democratic Party they will explain that you have no need to manage your money anyway. Rather, you should give all your money to the government to manage for you. No one can manage money as well as the government does.

It'd be over twice that much after taxes.
