It seems that every time there is a threat of high water/flooding, the news records scenes where locals are furiously filling bags with sand. I propose a fair weather sand-bagging operation and storage of these bags in locations that will benefit from them in the future. A version of the 6 Ps.

That is pretty radical thinking there.

That would remove the dramatic footage of politicians filling 5 or 6 bags in the heroic effort to help fight the flood.

As such never will happen

Logistics

The huge number of bags needed, filled, are a transport nightmare. They must be loaded, moved, unloaded.

And bags are much more easily stored onsite, take up much less room.

Current way: individuals and communities fill what they need themselves when they need them. More hands involved.

You should get right on that.

If for a levee it should be a community action. Individual houses? No.

People knowingly build on low flood plains to be closest to the water - and then figure they don't need to build up their elevation of the house or buy flood insurance either - figuring everyone else has to buy them another house and everything in it when flooded by the government paying.

You build or buy on a flood plain and it is YOUR risk, not mine or anyone else's.

Like this fellow?

Better yet if you live some where that needs sand bag to keep from flooding
do the smart thing.... Get out of there right now! Head for higher ground!
Or spend time filling sandbag for the rest of your life hoping your place
does not flood.

That's a good idea. Sometime it just floods, because of sudden massive downpours and backed up sewer lines.

Not to mention other disasters that can come up at any moment, from ice storms and power losses, down trees, earthquakes, fires, tornadoes, and more.

Agree with you... but my main point is there are places that flood over and over year after year.
Time to move to higher ground.

Something must keep them there. Have you ever watched house hunter episodes where they want a house right by the water? It makes me cringe. After having seen the aftermath of both Katrina and Ike first hand, I can only shake my head. Of course the ocean is beautiful when calm, but momma nature can turn on a dime quickly and forcefully. Nothing peaceful about that.

“Kinfolk said, Jed move away from there...............”

I have a back patio that can flood whenever we have big monsoon rains and there is a rapid amount of water in a short time, it can actually get into the house. Last year I found these great "sandbags" that are burlap bags filled with beads that swell up and absorb all the water like a diaper, and they are reusable and not a PITA to move around and store.

Local hardware store fills bags when there is heavy rain predicted and sells them cheap. That is my route. My sedan looks like a low rider traveling home though.

Sedan? I’m thinking the steering is a touch light as well. How many runs do you need to make to get effective flood protection?

South side of the house gets runoff from a hill.... That side required bags to reroute around the house........ Two Jetta trunk loads did the trick
