Illinois House approves marijuana legalization bill backed by Gov. J.B. Pritzker - Chicago Tribune

Pritzker will sign it.

Looks like legal marijuana will be available by Jan 1st.

The first state to legalize recreational dispensaries via the legislature.

Awesome! We had a big victory here in AZ, they have been trying to gut our medical MJ laws for years, every time they have tried to sue, they get their asses kicked. So the last attempt was to arrest people with MJ cards using extracts. They claimed extracts weren't covered in the bill we passed. The AZ SC knocked it down.

Wow.

This bill did make some concessions to law enforcement.

The big concession was making home growing illegal except for medical card holders.

Seems reasonable to me.

Hmm... celebrating the creation of a new "sin" tax as granting the sheeple more freedom.

Legalizing marijuana is expected to generate $57 million in general revenue in the coming budget year and $30 million for a cannabis business development fund. That’s far less than the $170 million Pritzker projected in his spending plan, but budget negotiators have said they aren’t counting on any of that revenue.

After paying for regulatory expenses and costs related to the expungement process, marijuana revenue would be divided among a number of areas. The largest share, 35%, would go into the state’s general fund; 25% would go to community grants; 20% to mental health and substance abuse programs; 10% to pay down the state’s backlog of unpaid bills; 8% to support law enforcement; and 2% for public education.

Great. Not only do we have to worry about drunks...but now potheads too.

Drunks are psycho and a danger. Potheads are like coffee addicts in reverse.

I think it's silly people can't grow their own. Up here we can grow up to four plants per household. It's a reasonable compromise - four plants ought to get you through the year, if you're decent at it. If you can grow grapes to make wine, you should be able to grow dope. Folks may balk at that, until you consider that the type of grapes you grow to make wine are really only good for making wine...you wouldn't want to eat them. So, yeah, it really is the same thing. :)

What are you worried about? Getting to the convenience store and not finding any Doritos? ;)

The worry is that you’ll feed the black/gray market, which is definitely a thing in other states.

It’s similar to the concept that it’s illegal to distill alcohol.

Realistically, if you’re dying to do it, you can jump through some hoops and get a medical card.

Or, you can take the risk of getting caught and paying a $200 fine for $300 worth of grow.

It’s a minor concession.

Please growing is one of the things I'm looking forward to with legalization.

It will be fun not having to have a closet lined with tin foil a light and a small fan, like I did when I was young...

Ummmm it is not illegal to distil alcohol...

maybe it will put pressure on my backwards red state to have a pot legal state next to it.

I wouldn’t count on it. But just drive over the border- we’ll hook you up.

my guess is that eventually, they'll get tired of spending four times as much on enforcement while losing out on the tons of money Illinois makes from this. they'll want that money more than their reefer madness eventually.

The tax revenue numbers are coming in. Resistance will be brief and futile.

The vote in Florida is rather a lock, 2020. We're a tourist state. Most of our money comes from alcohol sales, and cannabis tax revenue has exceeded that. Miami-Dade 'bout ta get rich.

Legalizing debilitating mind-altering drugs is a natural for godless democrats desiring to legalize every destructive sinful pleasure known to man.

My God, man, consider the possible benefits.

Imagine the surprise of believers when their first experience in the afterlife is a 100 year long course on how wrong they were about everything about which they were certain......

I look forward to you never visiting the state.

I probably won't make it, but God will. I pray people will prepare themselves to meet God before He suddenly shows up.
