Illinois raises smoking age to 21

Again, that's fine. The feds can make cigarettes available to the people who decide to join the military. I'm fine with that.

And your position doesn't explain why we have age 21 drinking laws and in most states completely ban pot and other drugs. If you're old enough to go into battle, aren't you also old enough to decide whether to drink alcohol, smoke pot, snort cocaine, and/or shoot up heroin?

Bottom line is "We should allow 18 year olds to buy cigarettes BECAUSE they can join the military or be drafted at age 18" isn't a compelling argument IMO. It's an argument for allowing 18 year olds to vote, because it's just that someone being asked to fight a war should have a say in who sends them to war, but this issue is very different. There's no 'right' to smoke, any more than there is a 'right' to drink or snort cocaine or take heroin or ingest pot in various forms.

So you believe someone that is mature enough to be forced to fight and die is not old enough to smoke? I'm stuck at this because if society deems a certain age group is not mature enough to decide to smoke or not then that same individual is definitely not mature enough to face a life and death struggle on a battlefield.

That's a reasonable discussion to be had. But Joko didn't start this thread with a purpose of having a reasonable discussion. He started this thread for the purpose of making the incredibly stupid argument that Democrats hate rights and freedoms because both democrats and republicans have passed legislation that you must be 21 before you smoke. We can have a debate about the issue, but Joko's "argument" (for lack of a better word) falls flat on it's face right out of the gate because it has no legs. It's the equivalent of a legless bulldog in a grey hound race.

Good one. Joko is a joko and nothing he posts should be taken seriously. You can get killed for your country at 18 but in most states you can't drink at eighteen, that's ok.

I guess I don't see the difference between smoking, drinking at 21 or being potentially put in jail for smoking pot, snorting coke, etc. versus being in the military. I'm not sure why "eligible to enlist" even matters tbh. You're also at 18 old enough to leave home, sign a contract, marry, have kids, but you can't drink or shoot up heroin.... Why does military service indicate some special measure of adulthood? If it does indicate something special, then as I've said I'm OK with the military providing cigarettes to 18 year olds on base.

Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker signed legislation on Sunday that raises the legal age for purchasing cigarettes, e-cigarettes and other tobacco products from 18 to 21.

HB 345 takes effect July 1. It aims to reduce tobacco use among teens and young adults by preventing them from starting, said Pritzker and state lawmakers who attended Sunday’s bill signing.

Other Democrat control states have or are passing similar laws. If the control freak fascist-socialists get their way, everyone will be a criminal for which they will used these laws selectively to imprison political opposition ala Gestapo and KGB style.

Other than truth and racial integration, there is nothing the Democratic Party hates more than individual rights and freedom. Do what you are told, say what you are told to say, act like you are ordered to act - or be imprisoned. This is at the core of the Democratic Party.

Didn't realize there were that many conservatives left in the Democratic Party.

Mindless drone like Trumpsters love state rights until they don't..

Just because a state comes up with a law, doesnt mean its a good one. Plus arguing against a particular state law is not the same as arguing against states rights as a whole. Glad this Trumpster was able to explain this complex concept to you. Let me know if I can be of any further assistance

It's has little to do with whether YOU or anyone else not in Illinois thinks this is a good law or bad. It's their state, and all the Trumpster hate spewed by Trumpsters about Dems in other states is just BS and more hypocrisy.

It is Illinois state RIGHT to pass this law. It might be changed or a court might strike it down, but it's still their STATE Right to pass it.

Thank you Captain Obvious. No one is saying that they cant pass this law. People are questioning how wise it is. I thought that was clear in my last post to you. Guess not.

It matters because that is the day the federal government deems you mature enough to fight and die if need be. I'd say that of all the scenarios, being old enough to be killed makes you an adult.

IMO, the age of adulthood should be just that. All rights and responsibilities of an adult. So if that be 16, 18, 21, 25, whatever. However, it should be consistent across the board. If you can be jailed as an adult, sent to war and have all the legal responsibilities of an adult, then you should have all the rights to being an adult.
Human brains may not develop the same way and at the same time which is why one person may not be old enough to safely metabolize liquor the same as another of the same age. Rental car companies are privately owned and have the right to impose age restrictions which I’m sure is tied to insurance. We haven’t had a draft since Vietnam so no one is being sent without their permission. Males tend to mature slower than females...in case u didn’t know.

I wonder how may strip club dancers will be cited for this. It would seem to be low hanging fruit to enforce such a law. I know for a fact that Illinois strip club dancers like to smoke and many of them are 18-20 years old.

Tobacco legislation is bipartisan as there are as many democrats as there are republicans beholden to big tobacco. Tobacco has been killing folks for decades and yet it’s still legal. How long do you think Tylenol would be on the shelves if study after study revealed its ingredients were carcinogenic, killing hundreds of thousands a year? Seems to me we should be wondering how cigs can even be fit for consumption.

Then make the legal age of adulthood 21, 25, or 30 for all I care. Just make it consistent.

It's perfectly fine if you want to argue that we should be letting 18 year olds smoke.

We shouldn't be "letting" 18 year olds do a goddamned thing. What we should be doing is throwing assholes out of office for failing to recognize that people who are legally responsible for their own welfare are adults.

So, if a 19-year-old c-store cashier sells an e-cig to his 20-year-old buddy, would they be tried as adults in court?

Old enough for Uncle Sam to call you up and put a gun in your hands, but not old enough to buy a pack of smokes. Both will get you killed, just my observation.
