Missouri lawmakers advance proposal for Bible classes in public schools | TheHill

The Missouri House Special Committee on Student Accountability voted to advance a bill from a Republican state lawmaker pushing for Bible classes in public high schools.

The bill, introduced by state Rep. Ben Baker, would require Missouri education officials to develop guidelines and standards for courses on the Old and New Testaments that could be offered as electives in public schools.

At least they are proposing to make this overt violation of the First A. an elective. Will be interesting to see how it makes out when it gets to the the Right-packed SCOTUS.

Why are Republicans always trying to inject the Christian religion into government?

Another terrible idea from Republicans.

It is all part of Project Blitz, part of a plan by Christian Dominionists to slither into incremental religious control of the United States government.

Talibornagain zealots

100x better then what Liberals inject into schools.

Because their interpretation of Christianity protects the powerful.

Meh, I'd be surprised if this passes. Missouri has a strong Republican presence in the legislative branch and the governor is a Republican, but I think there is enough common sense Republicans left to shoot this down. More concerning is a potential bill being pushed by some Republicans to dissolve the Missouri teacher retirement system based on outright lies, just so they can undermine the public school system.

What's wrong with that law maker? Doesn't he know that only Islam and the Koran may be taught in public schools - and only as a required course. Allowing optional classes in Christianity and the Bible are strictly forbidden by the Constitution.

I see you do not want anyone to take your post seriously. Carry on.

I wouldn't be so sure about that, man. I wouldn't be surprised if they had the majority of Missourians on their side with this one, and it shames me to say it.

I see you have no response. Islam is taught as a required course in some public schools with zero complaints from the left.

I get what you are saying, but I think there are enough reasonable people left that realize any court would strike the law down immediately.

Because your comment was stupid and a lie.

Oh really? Please list all the public high schools where Islam is a REQUIRED course.

(Hint: This is where you leave the thread not to be seen again.)

Over 70% of Americans are Christians. Christianity is deeply rooted in American and world history. It is absurd to claim that what Christianity is and the book it is based upon should not be taught as a secular course.

No it wouldn't. It would have be shown that the course is required and that it teaches Christianity and the Bible as a religion students must adopt, not as a historic and sociological matter. Many public universities paid for with public money have courses in various religions as educational rather than religious courses. There is no reason lower grades in public school could not nor should not teach about the religions of the world given the massive influence they have upon the world. No religion more affects the USA than Christianity.

You are literally making things up. Government forcing education to adopt religious guidelines for education would be struck down immediately.

Also, still waiting on you to show all those high schools that require Islam classes.

I wouldn't put my faith in reasonable people, but I can't find any polls on Missourians and the seperation of church and state. My opinion is only informed by a perception based on my little corner of SEMO, so I'm not going to pretend that my opinion is any more valid than yours.

I would find it quite disturbing if Islam or any other religion was offered up as a class in a public school at all. I see no need to add and bolden the word, 'required'.

Comparative religion class seems like a reasonable elective.

As always when these policies show up, the question will be whose bible? Teaching the Old and New Testament only? Unconstitutional. Teaching all known bibles? Impossible.

Hold your bible study in the non taxed building provided by the rest of the taxpayers or on the sidewalk. Government has no business in religion. Religion has no business in government.

And what would be the point? The only benefit that I can think of is the istillment of religious tolerance, but shouldn't that already be covered by history/social-studies? I just feel like it's a waste of a class. I learned all I needed to know about Greek Mythology even before I entered junior high.

Seems like religion has had a pretty outsized influence on history and cultures all over the world.

You can’t cover everything in depth in general history or social studies courses.

I was just challenging joko's claim that Islam was taught as a required course. Which, of course, he has not offered any evidence to support.
