Sen. Pat Roberts, a Kansas Republican whose elected career has spanned nearly four decades across both Congressional chambers, will step down at the end of his term in 2020, he said Friday.

His retirement opens the door to a range of potential Republican candidates for the seat, including former Gov. Jeff Colyer; Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, a former Kansas congressman; Rep. Roger Marshall; and Kansas Secretary of State Kris Kobach.

It will be interesting to see how this works out. Especially with regards to Kobach, who never saw a vote he didn't want to suppress.

Kobach is pure scum. That would make him the ideal GOP candidate.

I read a story that opines the Adm will see if they can slide Pompeo into the seat as he does well in Kansas, in an attempt to hold the seat after 2020. Sec of State nominee would be interesting.

Too bad Charles Manson is no longer with us.

I would not like to meet the many women who proposed marriage to this psycho, or the one who married him in prison:

Charles Manson marrying 26-year-old woman in prison

Afton Burton said she is in love with the mass murderer. Burton said Manson changed her name to "Star."

Congressman Matt Schlapp and chair of CPAC has already thrown his hat into the ring for 2020 to run for Roberts seat. He announced it today.

Kansas 2018 General Election shows the vote totals for the three GOP congressmen in KS who won in 2018 — Marshall, Watkins, Estes — as well as the new Dem — Davids.

Pompeo represented CD 4 and would easily win for Senator, if he wants it. Lower voter totals in the three GOP CDs compared to the Dem one really don’t explain Kobach’s loss, since the other four statewide races were won easily by Repubs.

There are enough 3rd party votes in KS to make a difference if the race is close, such as KS-02 last year, a huge disappointment for DEMs.

Was he ever elected to Congress?

No JANFU I was wrong. He is currently the American Conservative Union Chairman. I thought he was a Congress critter from Kansas. He has been in politics for a long time but not at an elected position. Schlapp served as campaign manager and chief of staff to Representative Todd Tiahrt, a longtime representative of Kansas, and more recently as the deputy assistant to President George W. Bush. Thanks for pointing out my error.
