Should a big deal be made about wackos that get on the general election ballot for a useless spot on the ballot? Anyone has a legal right to do this. Should we hesitate before interfering with an individual's right? Should major parties be burdened to committing resources to stop this? Should these wacko candidates just be considered a source of entertainment?

‘This is horrific’ – Ted Cruz SLAMS Nazi who snuck into GOP nomination in Illinois – The Right Scoop

I found a commenter's perspective interesting, but I'm not sure I agree with it. However, I like it when someone promotes competence.

He did not sneak in.

He has always been overtly vocal about his Nazism and white supremacy. Jones has been running for office on the Republican ticket several times since the 1970's. He declared for the current seat in 2017 and has been very vocal about it, appearing across news networks, where he was repeatedly shut down for his Nazism and white supremacist ideology.

Instead of running other candidates against him, the GOP sat tight, mumbled disgusts, but allowed him to run unopposed. Why? Sneaking in implies that the came out of nowhere. He did not. He was always there and the GOP in Illinois did nothing to effectively stop him and allowed him to run unopposed so he won their nomination to represent the GOP for that seat. The GOP could have had an empty chair run against this guy and the chair would have won. They chose to not run any candidate against him.

They do not get to complain. Conservative voters in the state are the ones who get to complain, because the GOP openly allowed this guy to run unopposed until he won the primary. They could have ejected him from the party, stripped him of the party's affiliation and actually distanced themselves from him. Instead they just came out with the stock standard of "appalled" and "horrified". They made this bed by allowing this guy to campaign as the GOP and to run unopposed.

So in the Primary, Jones received over 20,000 votes (think about that for a moment, over 20,000 people voted for this guy). The only ones to blame for that is the GOP who failed to run another candidate against him, despite knowing who he was and what he represented. This is the rubbish that will stain the GOP for a long time and no amount of deflection and "shocked and appalled" will wash that stink off.

Well isn't this guy exactly the type trump wants in Congress to support him? They just no longer attempt to hide what they are, MAGA......

I see no reason why a party has to waste time and resources on a seat they know for a fact they won't win. As far as I know the GOP tried many times to keep him from affiliating with the GOP.

Actually they do. Some people always vote their party no matter what without much thought. I can imagine some octogenarian saying to his wife. "Well, Mabel, they're voting today, you want to walk down to the corner and vote?" They just mark the only Republican on the ballot and were happy they had "something to do".

well, I have said since my early days, "Americans are stupid" so, I guess it's true ............

I think all this disingenuous "see, the GOP is NAZI" is an effort to make the GOP do exactly that: spend money and resources.

Doesn't the Republican Party have freedom of association? Why can't they just disassociated their name with this candidate? That wouldn't take the expenditure of any resources.

This is about all that can be done.
From your article,

The Illinois Republican Party announced in February they would not support him, saying it has "no place for Nazis like Arthur Jones."

Illinois Republican Party spokesman Aaron DeGroot told Politico this week that the party is planning on supporting a write-in candidate for the general election.

There are ballot access laws and primary election procedures. Arthur Jones is legally entitled to be listed as the Republican nominee for that congressional election.

The lesser of two evils voter.

The worst person in my party is always better than the best person in the other party voter/I'll always vote my party no matter what voter. IE the party-tard.

Both of these groups plague both parties. Its how Clinton and Trump won the presidential primaries.

Its why I think party affiliations and names should be banned on ballots. Instead it should be a serial code where there name would be on the ballot and underneath it the issues they support and oppose listed along with any information that might support or contradict those claims and additional details on the voting booth walls and booklet of the same information for busy polling places.

Finally, a republican that is honest about being a nazi.

Nice party you used to have...

Ballot access requirements for political candidates in Illinois

https://ballotpedia.org/Ballot_access_requirements_for_political_candidates_in_Illinois

snippet...

In order to get on the ballot in Illinois, a candidate for state or federal office must meet a variety of state-specific filing requirements and deadlines. These regulations, known as ballot access laws, determine whether a candidate or party will appear on an election ballot. These laws are set at the state level. A candidate must prepare to meet ballot access requirements well in advance of primaries, caucuses, and the general election.

There are three basic methods by which an individual may become a candidate for office in a state.

An individual can seek the nomination of a state-recognized political party.
An individual can run as an independent. Independent candidates often must petition in order to have their names printed on the general election ballot.
An individual can run as a write-in candidate.
