Iowa man wins legal battle to say hometown stinks - BBC News

A town in Iowa has agreed to drop a lawsuit against a resident who criticised officials because the place smells like "rancid dog food".

A federal court sided with web developer Josh Harms, issuing a permanent injunction ordering Sibley, Iowa, officials not to sue him.

Sibley officials threatened legal action over Mr Harms' website 'Should You Move to Sibley, Iowa?'

Apparently there is a nearby animal processing plant that generates that smell.

And another example of counterproductive behavior. If the city hadn’t sued the guy then people like me never would have learned their city stinks. It is unlikely I would have ever stumbled across his blog.

These people need to read their constitution again.

I have never been to Sibley, IA. But, I have been to Gainesville, Georgia, probably the largest chicken producing city in the country. It stinks to high heaven.

There is a sugar beet processing plant near Brawley CA that stinks up the area for miles... Stockton CA in the 1980s reminded me of pencils as a wood processing plant stunk up the area. And the shore towns around the Salten Sea all stink when a fish die off is going on.

Ever been to a pulp-mill town? Think boiled egg farts.

Not surprised to learn a man was sued for telling the truth.

Every state has towns/cities that stink. In Central Ohio there's a Mead paper plant that when the wind is blowing against your favor on route 23 around Chillicothe its enough to make you lose your lunch. Same thing with a rendering plant off of I-71. The stench is horrific.

I have been through several. Fortunately just passing through.

But I did live across the street from a brewery, that was not pleasant either. Or renting a farm house where the owner rented the barn area to a pig farmer.

Smells are part of life, as is complaining about them.

I worked with a guy who found a really nice piece of property, going for cheap, and jumped on it. In the winter. Come spring the pig farmer next door cleaned out his barns...

I used to live in St Albert. Back road to the Garrison, one side of the road they started throwing up 1/2 M to M homes. one the other side of the road was a farm. They had a big operation. After all these home were up, sold, he then shifted to using liquid pig manure to spread.
Did not recall him using this prior to all the house building.
I sorta got used to it when I was stationed in Germany for 6 years, but at 30 C, hot day, like driving into a wall of stink. Now think of those living in those houses. It seeps in.

I lived in Austin, IN for a couple of years when I worked for Cummins Engines... It's home to the Morgan Foods company. Live there for a while, and you will never eat beef stew again... That place ALWAYS smelled like rotten meat.

So, sue me.
