Apparently, there is no level of control over the lives of his constituents that is too much. If this passes, your rightfully earned high school diploma will be held in ransom until you meet extra requirements.

Emanuel wants to add a CPS graduation requirement: Get acceptance letter - Chicago Tribune

Mayor Rahm Emanuel wants Chicago public high school students to show they have a plan for what's next before they can get a diploma.

Emanuel's proposal would add one more big item to the graduation checklist for high school seniors: proof they've been accepted into college or the military, or a trade or a "gap-year" program. The requirement would also be satisfied if the student has a job or a job offer.

What is stopping them from changing plans right after they get the diploma?

Revoked? Who knows? If he's willing to go this far then why not revoke it?

Do employers actually check to see if someone has a High School diploma?

How does this dude still have a job?

I do if the employee turns out to be a problem child. Falsifying a resume gives me an easy reason to terminate them.

What about delayed entry into the uniformed military services?

Thats a fine post graduate plan probably not approved by an America hating asshole like the Chicago mayor

.....A top CPS official also acknowledged, however, that every Chicago public high school graduate essentially already meets the new standard because graduation guarantees admittance to the City Colleges of Chicago community college system.....

It's Chicago Petes sake, so "Urban shooting" will most certainly qualify for a career course of action to obtain a diploma, with "Urban Pharmaceuticals" as a possible alternate.

Whiskey Tango Foxtrot!

This guy can't be serious?

The first time I've ever agreed with this asshole. Every state should require it.

I understand the thinking behind it, but this sounds like a terrible method to achieving the goal. Put me in the "this is really stupid" category.

No way, American.

Forcing private citizens to get a job or go to college in order to confer their H.S. diploma?

Why? What bearing do these things have on an individual's prior academic performance? Why should a good student be passed over if he or she won't do the state's bidding after they finish their academic requirements?

This sounds like stateism.

it's a way to force high school students to recognize the reality that a HS diploma is a commencement, not an ending
only 18% of the students go on to complete 4 year degrees
the target is 60% by 2025
and there is no reason for any student to be denied their diploma - IF they expend the effort to apply to a local community college. chicago HS diplomas automatically grant the newly minted graduate admission to community colleges

not a fan of rahm, but this is a good idea

So is requiring you to attend school, or passing certain classes to get your diploma.

Some people don't like crippling debt. College is a scam.
