Rahm Emanuel to require post-high school plan to get diploma.

and there are many stay at home mom's whose only means of sustenance is from the taxpayers
which would you prefer?
rahm prefers to motivate those prospective mothers to be self sustaining

I would prefer people be free to make their own choices in life. If you don't want to give them welfare then just don't.

i believe the approach would encourage the prospective mother to figure out what to do upon graduation from high school to be able to accomplish her dream
unless you would prefer her to stay at home on the dole while having kids requiring taxpayer assistance

Do you believe all stay at home mom's are "on the dole while having kids requiring taxpayer assistance"?

There is absolutely nothing wrong with being a stay-at-home mom, but this proposal treats it as a negative and penalizing the person for it.

Yes, agreed.

Who said anything about on the dole and taxpayer assistance? I included marriage and stay-at-home mom, which clearly suggests a husband with a job. You made the negative leap on your own.

And here I always pegged you for a small government guy. Huh!

How much does it cost to require a student to have a plan? Yeah I thought so.

I didn't know that small government was only about how much it cost. I thought it was about how much control they had over your lives.

Big government is good if it's free? Really?

It's Chicago. Where does govt begin and end for you? At what point is it too big?

And asking student for a plan for their future is too much control for you? I suppose you've been protesting day and night to rid your state of the need for fishing licences? Please provide a photo of your efforts.

The answer is, it's none of their damn business what my plans were after High School.

then you would cause the moms' children to suffer
not the kind of society i want to be a part of

no
now for an equally stupid question, do you believe no stay at home moms receive public assistance
such questions do nothing to advance the debate

that mom who has made no plans to become self sustaining after receiving her high school diploma
pretty good chance she will wind up on the dole
and i suspect that is part of what is behind rahm's effort to get students to ponder what their plans are after graduation
the diploma marks a beginning - not an end
he is seeking to show that reality to these prospective HS graduates

This whole parental thing is really getting in the way of the city just taking over all children. All these kids need is a 'Godfather' and Chicago will quickly become the land of milk and honey.

Answer the question. How much govt is okay with you? Can we get rid of the public school system and go completely private? Answer up or get out of my face. I want to know about the fishing licenses too, don't forget. Too much govt everywhere is wrong, and you're going to cover all of it. I'm going to keep asking you about everything that big govt until you tell me where it stops. You wanted to hound me about this. Okay, I'm here, now answer up.

There is a fair chance, absolutely. I wasn't talking about them. I was specifically talking about those for whom a family is their plan.

Under this plan, as well-intentioned as it might be, I can see some kids quitting school with a "Why bother?" attitude. You no longer earn rewards for accomplishment, there's always some next hoop through which to jump.

It is for me. Communist and socialist countries do this. If you exhibit ability at gymnastics, you become a gymnastics trainee.

Government has no need to know what I'm going to do next.

in germany, and possibly some scandinavian countries, after completing elementary school, the students are routed to further education consistent with their displayed aptitudes and interests. those who want a more professional career will follow a college prep track. students wanting to become tradesmen commence an apprenticeship program. the remaining students complete a general education program
to me, that appears to be a better approach than what we find in the USA

But, do they withhold earned awards of accomplishment at any stage during the process?

i don't know
but it is my understanding the chicago students must fulfill public works/volunteer requirements as a condition of graduation
altho not academic in nature, it is another aspect of matriculation that many students should be exposed to but often are not unless it is thru the schools
i remain unable to see the logic which tells us we should not prepare our kids for life beyond high school while they are still attending high school

I know some stay at home receive assistance. Guess in the future one must read between the lines when you make broad statements.

Rahm's plan is just plain stupid.

well, there you have it

this forum member says rahm's approach is stupid - because it is just plain stupid

it is at this point in the thread when i must defer to the folks who obviously know better than i what constitutes 'stupid'

Your welcome.
Try not to place all stay at home women in the same group next time.

Any young adult should choice their own life path. Government should not hold back a HS diploma which the person earned because it does not fit some politicians view.

(I know your a sarcastic poster and like to throw out stuff to see what sticks.).

No, I won't get out of your face for making inane statements. Your questions are also ridiculously specious, have nothing to do with the topic, and as you've demonstrated has no end in sight.

So I'll stick with my answer to this subject, which is it's none of the governments damn business what anyone does with their lives after high school. Clear enough for you?
