Aldermen want Trump stripped of his honorary Chicago plaza - Chicago Tribune

Chicago has long had a prominent downtown street named for Italian fascist Italo Balbo — but an honorary plaza named for Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump is an insult that goes too far, a group of aldermen say.

So at a City Council meeting Wednesday, Ald. Brendan Reilly, 42nd, introduced an ordinance that would strip Trump's name from the small plaza in front of his River North hotel on Wabash Avenue.

The move would punish Trump for "painting a distorted caricature of Chicago" on the campaign trail and for "comparing our great city to a decimated, war-torn country," said Reilly, in whose ward the Trump Tower stands.

He was backed by eight other aldermen who agreed with Reilly's statement that "honorary street signs are meant to honor special Chicagoans who've made a positive contribution to our city."

The proposed ordinance also states that Trump has run a "hateful, racist campaign against immigrants and minorities," and accuses him of a "complete disregard for civil liberties dating back to the 1970s."

It could take about a month to be enacted, Reilly said, adding that "there are millions of people who live and work here who are very proud of our city, and given his actions in recent months, he doesn't warrant an honorary street sign."

Trump's comments about Chicago in the first presidential debate (in which he called for stop-and-frisk tactics to be used here to combat gun violence) were "the final straw," added Reilly, who said he would send back campaign contributions he previously received from Trump "with his honorary street sign."

Right. Like this is the most pressing issue facing Chicago. I am sure it will make a difference in the lives of the ten people who will be shot in the city this weekend.

But some good old fashioned hypocrisy plays well and deflects from bad things for the minute.

Chicago alderman can't vote to tighten Indiana gun laws.

I imagine they would if they could, because strict gun control laws have been so effective there....

You cant really have good gun control laws when someone can walk across the street over the Indiana border and guy a duffel bag full of weapons to sell in Englewood later that afternoon.

Lol !! Yea, Chicago's weekly body count ( Black Lives Matter ! ) is Indiana's fault....Wow.

In 2015 Chicago had 2,987 shooting victims. It became so bad that Jessie Jackson organization PUSH called on Obama to institute a state of emergency in Chicago. One year ago 18 aldermen pushed for McCarthy (then the police chief) to be dismissed citing a 21% increase in shootings. Outside of DC Chicago prolly (I'll admit I haven't checked this, but perception is a bitch eh?) has the highest rate of corruption in its political system in the US. I can't remember the last time anyone said anything good about the schools in Chicago.

And Ald. Brendan Reilly is concerned about Trump speaking the truth? Excuse me while I go roflmao....

Yeah, I don't think there is a better symbol of his narcissism than seeing a gigantic gaudy TRUMP! sign hanging over our heads.

Just typical for Democratic leadership in a city that is rife with violence, failing schools and a true divide between rich and poor.
The poor little snowflakes are worried about a sign with Trump's name on it.

Citizens of Chicago don't like their Mayor.

Protecting Mayor Rahm Emanuel is tougher than protecting Mayor Richard M. Daley.

Morning Spin: 'More people hate' him: The difficulties of protecting Emanuel - Chicago Tribune

So says Chicago police Cmdr. Brian Thompson, who spoke about the differences running Daley’s security detail and Emanuel’s while testifying this week in the federal trial of a civil lawsuit brought by eight white or Hispanic police officers removed from the current mayor’s detail.

“A lot more people hate (Emanuel) for various reasons, as opposed to Daley,” Thompson told jurors.

“There are a lot more protesters,” he added. “Due to current events in the city of Chicago, the threat level to the mayor is a lot higher.”

Yea lets get that nasty street sign down! Right now!

I have a question for you: do you ever actually think about an answer before you type it? or do you just automatically go to liberal rote? You may not be aware of this, but there are quite a few guns and gun owners in the city in which I live. Tons of them, actually. And this weekend, like every weekend this year, there will be no one killed in gun violence. What does that tell you? Probably nothing. What should it tell you? That guns aren't the problem and gun control isn't the solution. Furthermore, if it is guns from Indiana that are causing the problem in Chicago, why arent the cities of Indiana ablaze with gunfire? I suspect that unless your liberal masters who do your thinking for you haven't already answered that question, you will be unable to on your own. But give it a shot. Thinking for yourself and truly questioning what it is you believe are quite healthy. Try it and see.

Chicago, believe it or not, is safer than Indy

I suspect your conservative masters do your thinking for you, but if you think for yourself and actually make the connections between complex issues and logic is quite healthy. Try it and see.

Chicago politicians against the Republican nominee? Say it ain't so? Any excuse will do I guess.

However, his actions are worth reflection on what he should and shouldn't be recognized. I would be careful if I were the Democrats, though. If Wikileaks keeps up what they've been doing, Hillary may finally be brought before a Grand Jury, and that won't end well for her.

Yeah.

Go Putin!

Why are so many people confused that legislative bodies can do more than one thing at a time?

Pretty sure they're not confused by that. Pretty sure they're just wondering why those legislative bodies are wasting time and tax payer money on dealing with something so stupid and trivial instead of spending their time wisely and tax payer money on things that actually need to be addressed. Such as crime and schooling.

Plus I'm pretty sure that there isn't a human being in the entire world that can speak about two completely different subjects at exactly the same time anyways. What would come out of their mouths wouldn't sound anything like English or any known language in the entire world. So no, the legislative bodies, while discussing this are not working on more than one thing at a time. They are just discussing this issue. Instead of the issues that need to actually be addressed. Haven't you ever been to a council meeting? They talk about one subject for an allotted amount of time and then move on to another subject at the end of that allotted time for the duration of its allotted time. They do not talk about two subjects during the same allotted amount of time.

I think you may be unaware of how committees work.

I think you may be unaware of how people have conversations/discussions/debates.

I'm quite aware!

For example, in this thread, people who couldn't dispute the point of the OP pretend that the city council can't do anything else because crime exists.

Show me where anyone in this thread says that they can't do anything else. I haven't seen anyone say that. Which means you're just using strawmen.
