ISTANBUL — Turkey deployed F-16 fighter jets against government forces in northwestern Syria on Monday, a sharp escalation of the conflict there after six Turkish soldiers were killed by artillery strikes. President Recep Tayyip Erdogan of Turkey said that as many as 35 Syrian troops had been “neutralized.” The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a monitoring group based in Britain, said the number of military personnel killed was at least 13, while state news media in Syria made no mention of any deaths. There were also reports on social media of at least eight civilian deaths when a minibus was struck. Mr. Erdogan warned Russia, which backs the Syrian government and which controls the airspace in western Syria, not to prevent Turkey from retaliating.

The deployment of air power came after the Turkish Defense Ministry said that a supply convoy bringing reinforcements into the observation posts on Monday had come under fire, leaving six Turkish soldiers dead and several others wounded. The movement of the convoy had been coordinated beforehand, the statement said, and Turkish forces retaliated immediately. Moscow, however, disputed Turkey’s account about coordinating with other forces in the province, saying that the Russian Defense Ministry had not been told about the troop movements. Turkey has always supported the opposition forces fighting against the Syrian government of President Bashar al-Assad, including some radical Islamists, and has sought to delay the Russian-Syrian advance to take Idlib. Video distributed on social media showed people setting fire to their homes before fleeing the town of Saraqeb, ahead of the advancing Syrian forces. “We don’t want to leave anything behind for the thugs,” a voice in the background says.

Erdogan is only in Syria to kill Kurds and steal Syrian oil fields.

The Internet is full of photos and videos of Russian troops in Syria, which, by the way, are the only ones who are there legally -the invitation of the Syrian government, but the world has been waiting for 6 years for a photo or video of the legendary Russian troops in the Donbass... the fact is that the miners of Donbass cope themselves with the "best army in Europe", with nazi scum and stupid village idiots.

Yes, I know, they traded ukrainian citizens for ukrainian citizens. Of the 35, only 9 were Russian citizens. Of these nine, only four were captured during military operations, and after the so-called ceasefire, One of them was captured by a Ukrainian subversive group during a night raid on the territory of the DPR in the summer of 2016. None of them were Russian soldiers. They were volunteers. Volunteers from many countries were in the ranks of the people's militia of Donbass, from Europe, Asia and America. The Russians were among them. And don't flatter yourself and the Ukrainian army. How they would "fight" was shown in the Crimea in the spring of 2014. If Russian troops had entered the war, the war would have ended for the fascist bastards as quickly as it did for the Georgians in 2008.
The other five were simply captured by the Ukrainian fascists in order to have an exchange fund. This is what they usually did, changing anyone, captured from the streets for their military prisoners in people militia captivity. Ukrainian prisoners went to exchange with their legs, Donetsk prisoners often had to be carried on a stretcher. Fascists are known for their brutality, like their ancestors during the war. Vile creatures.
Russia provided for exchange 11 convicted ukrainian terrorists. the remaining 24 are sailors whom Poroshenko sent to die in the Kerch strait at the end of 2018, hoping to arrange a bloody provocation, as was done in the summer of 2014 with a Malaysian plane.
You are really clueless on this subject... Well "fake news" works.

What were armed russians doing in Ukraine?

124 prisoners were swapped back to russia-occupied Ukraine on December 30. 6 were known Ukrainians (5 Berkut / Volodymyr Tsemakh of MH-14 infamy). russian ombudsperson for occupied Luhansk Olga Kobtseva said 9 prisoners (of 63) released to her custody refused to return to occupied Luhansk. russian ombudsperson for occupied Donetsk Darya Morozova stated 10 prisoners (of 61) released to her custody refused to return to occupied Donetsk.

I understand that most Democrats want the USA to get into WW3 with Russia, our NATO ally Turkey and Syria because the Democratic party has always been the party of war, death and destruction.

Erdogan demands that Assad/Putin stop butchering civilians in Idlib which is putting another 1.5 million Syrian refuges on the Turkish border.
 
Meanwhile, the Assad regime continues to cynically destroy the achievements of democracy. The regime aggressively restored the operation of the international airport in Aleppo. The first flight from Damascus will be accepted on wednesday.

The Soviet Union routinely intervened in other countries, both openly and covertly, ranging from Hungary to Afghanistan to propping up North Korea.

When I read this, I don't know what's more in it, cynicism, ignorance, or hypocrisy, or all of it... How many hundreds of U.S. military bases are there around the world? What is the US military budget? Either you have no idea what you are talking about, which is not surprising at all, given the level of knowledge of the average American, especially about international relations, caused by a lifetime of "fake news" propaganda or.... however, this is enough not to take your opinion seriously.

You are the one crying about “interventionism”.....and the vast majority of those bases were set up because the aggressive actions of the USSR and it’s proxies caused other nations to want protection.

The USSR was every bit as “interventionist” as any of the nations you criticize

Unlike the USSR, however, the US never rolled tanks into an allied state to protect military bases and destroy efforts at reforming their regime.
