Why Did Trump Call Off The Taliban Talks: A Negotiating Tactic, Washington Worries About The Deal, Or Showmanship?

9/8/19
U.S. President Donald Trump’s bombshell decision to cancel a secret meeting at Camp David with Taliban and Afghan leaders and halt peace negotiations with the militant group has upended nearly a year of painstaking diplomacy to end an 18-year war. Trump said on September 7 that he broke off the talks following a deadly Taliban attack in Kabul two days earlier that killed an American soldier. But analysts said the reasons behind the president’s decision run deeper and could be a negotiating tactic, due to worries about the deal in Washington, and possibly a case of failed showmanship.

This article looks at the different possible rationale for Trumps decision to call off the US/Taliban talks in Geneva.....

Worries in Washington?
Presidential Showmanship?
Negotiating Tactic?

I think it was a simple matter of him losing the support of quite a lot of his steadfast republicans in Congress.

Trumps timing sucked.

It had nothing to do with that and everything to do with the fact that the Taliban were refusing to negotiate in good faith so he told them to go piss up a rope till they can honestly come to the table and negotiate.

Everything about Trump sucks.

So you're just really sick and tired of all the success and prosperity we're having huh???

I know how you feel! Having our country be so well run and having a president that is actually looking out for the interests of Americans after 8 years of that **** up Obama is hard to take!

This has very little to do with Geneva, and mostly to do with a collision of problems that Trump could not escape.

There probably was some "worries in Washington" when it came to Republican lack of support for a supposedly secret meeting at Camp David around the time of 9-11, and no matter what Trump tries to sell this as the whole thing is in poor taste.

It is also a bit dubious for Trump to blame one attack as the reasoning for cancelling this negotiation anyway. No one doubts the importance, and how sad it all is, that yet another American life was lost a few days prior to Trump's decision but we can see from records that we lost lives on August 29th, 21st, July 29th, 24th, going on back.

This is the failure, and it is now Trump's failure to really do much one way or the other when it comes to Afghanistan.

It may be bad for Trump supporters that 'the art of the deal' did not do much with Afghanistan, but the real loss are those over there still in harms way with the Taliban clearly interested in continued conflict and taking life.

18 years... we accomplished very little, at one hell of a cost in lives and dollars.

Seriously, what a shock, right? How dare a terrorist organization not negotiate 'in good faith'. Wow, that's just about the most naive comment yet, but wait -- more are coming. No, that's not why. There would have been an uproar among Americans the likes of which Trump has not seen yet. That's why he cancelled it, it was a stupid, ignorant idea to begin with.

I'm not prosperous that's for sure, Trump hasn't made a bit of difference in my life. He has however, caused chaos and destruction of the rule of law.

What we know for sure is that nothing is what Trump says it is because he is incapable of telling a straight story without some amount of deception to keep people from knowing what he's thinking. It's a pathology. He can't let the truth pass his lips, so he lies. If he told the truth, he'd turn into a toad. Worse than that, perhaps a liberal.

Are you telling me that the great deal maker, the stable genius and the guy with a good brain who “talks to himself first and foremost about foreign policy” failed to figure out a way to make The Taliban “negotiate in good faith”.

Woh!

I would never have thought.

It's quite possible that it was the attack. Trump is impulsive.
