ANKARA, July 8. /TASS/. Preparations continue to dispatch Russian-made S-400 air defense missile system to Turkey and an operation to load them onto a transport plane is underway, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan announced at a news conference on Monday. The Turkish TV Channel Haberturk reported on Friday, citing sources, that the shipment of the Russian-made S-400 anti-aircraft missile system to Turkey could begin on July 7. According to the TV channel’s data, the first S-400 system was due to be loaded onto a transport plane to be delivered next week. Haberturk also reported that nine Russian technical specialists would arrive in Turkey before Monday to help deploy S-400 missile system. During the first stage, one S-400 set will be delivered to Ankara, the TV channel reported."The preparations for the dispatch [of S-400 system] continue. The loading is underway. There are agreed dates for S-400 deliveries," the Turkish president said.

This will drive a further wedge between Turkey and the US/NATO.

My understanding is that Russian S-400 systems will begin arriving in Turkey today, 7/9/19.

How can any nation buy advanced weapon systems from Russia and expect to stay in NATO??

That's precisely the question that Pompeo and NATO have raised. The S-400 is incompatible with NATO systems. It goes deeper. Turkey purchased F-35 fighter jets (none have been delivered yet). Turkish pilots currently training in Texas with the F-35 will be sent home early at the end of July and this training program will close. The Pentagon is all too aware that the Russian S-400 anti-air system on Turkish soil could be used to probe Turkish F-35 jets for various weaknesses that Moscow could exploit.

A very real problem here is that Trump likes dictators and Erdogan is no exception. The Pentagon fears that Trump may override objections and order the F-35 deal with Ankara to proceed in order to placate Erdogan.

The Mi-17 has been around since 1975. It in no way represents any kind of major technological advantage or development compared to the S-400 or the F-35.

Indeed. That was simply Kremlin disinformation to divert from the OP.

Both Moscow and Ankara confirm that S-400 components have been delivered to the Murted air base outside the capital pf Ankara.
