Russia-Syria assault on Idlib leaves over 500 civilians dead

Group says death toll in offensive that began in April includes 130 children, with more than 2,000 people wounded.

At least 544 civilians have been killed and more than 2,000 people wounded since a Russian-led assault on the last rebel-held bastion in northwestern Syria began two-and-a-half months ago, according to rights groups and rescuers. Russian fighter jets joined the Syrian army on April 26 in the offensive against rebel-held Idlib and adjoining northern Hama provinces, in the biggest escalation in the war between Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's forces and rebel fighters since last summer. The Syrian Network for Human Rights (SNHR), which monitors casualties and briefs various United Nations agencies, said on Saturday that 130 children were among the 544 civilians killed in the hundreds of attacks carried out by Russian jets and the Syrian army. Another 2,117 people were wounded. "The Russian military and its Syrian ally are deliberately targeting civilians with a record number of medical facilities bombed," Fadel Abdul Ghany, chairman of SNHR, told Reuters news agency.

Last month, US-based Human Rights Watch said the Russian-Syrian joint military operation had used cluster munitions and incendiary weapons in the attacks, along with large air-dropped explosive weapons, based on reports by first responders and witnesses. Residents and rescuers say the campaign has left dozens of villages and towns in ruins. According to the UN, at least 300,000 people have been forced to leave their homes for the safety of areas closer to the border with Turkey. On Friday, 15 people, including children, were killed in the village of Mhambil in western Idlib province after Syrian army helicopters dropped barrel bombs on a civilian quarter, the civil defence group and witnesses said. It came a day after aid groups said an aerial raid on Kafr Nabl hospital made it the 30th facility to be bombed during the campaign, leaving hundreds of thousands with no medical access. Last month, UN aid chief Mark Lowcock asked Russia to explain how it used data on the location of Syrian hospitals and clinics following a string of attacks on health facilities. More than 23 hospitals have been hit by attacks since the offensive on Idlib began in late April, according to the UN. The heads of 11 major global humanitarian organisations warned at the end of June that Idlib - home to three million civilians, including one million children - stood at the brink of disaster. "Too many have died already" and "even wars have laws" they declared, in the face of multiple attacks by government forces and their allies on hospitals, schools and markets", the UN-endorsed statement said.

The real war crimes in Syria have been committed by US and Israeli and other western powers.

Including false flags. Does ISIS stand for Israeli State Intelligence (or Infantry) Services.

The local mouthpiece for MSM misinformation has done his duty. The CIA will be proud. IDLIB is home to most of the Islamic militants a/k/a ISIS, al Qeda, White Helmets, etc. and this was to be expected when they were relocated to Idlib. The smart ones will go to Turkey.

Nice to see DaveFagan is back and spreading RT.COM lies.....

Dishonestly conflating an aid organization with terrorist organizations....

Do you have any evidence that ISIS is connected to Israel in any way, shape or form, or is this more of your foaming at the mouth anti-semitism?

Looks like the Russians are following the strategy from the USA assault on Raqqa. If the USA does it, it must be OK.

The Russians were carpet-bombing Syria long before US jets were ever in those skies.

And another thing, Syrians on the ground provided the grid coordinates for coalition air-strikes on ISIS-held Raqqa.....

Calling the shots: The Syrians behind air attacks on Raqqa

Geezus. I haven't seen you get anything right here in 6 years.

I hold no sympathy for idlib, al quaeda affiliates are non stop attacking civilians and military positions of russia and syria, no sane govt would let them stand to do what they do. Any mention of rebel bastion is pretty much bs as rebels were overtaken by hts terrorists almost immediately and almost the entire area is run by al quaeda.

Russia and syria have actually abided by agreements in the ceasefire, hts has not, yet russia and syria are demonized as bad guys while hts is not, yet it was the fault of hts aka al quaeda of syria that the ceasefire was violated because they refused to abide by it but demanded russia and syria abide by it and simply let their military and civilians die. Turkey has fought tooth and nail to keep the ceasefire going, but with groups like hts neither state actor will sit by and watch people get killed nor allow groups like hts to go unimpeded.

You should google the definition of carpet bombing, no force has carpet bombed syria at all, the closest thing to it being the american assault on raqqa, which even that was not carpet bombing, your style argument sounds good to those appealing to emotion but falls apart for those appealing to facts.

Russia and syria have actually abided by agreements in the ceasefire, hts has not,

That is an outright lie. Putin and Assad have never stopped committing war crimes in Syria.

Why you always offer apologia/support for Putin and Assad is a mystery. A growing possibility is that you take perverse pleasure in the over-application of power.

But you conveniently ignor hts which has been using the area as human shields and has violated the ceasefire since day one. Incase you did not know ceasefires work both ways, russia and syria abided by it, turkey and it's own supported rebels abided by it, all until hts defied it, broke the ceasefire and to this day have not stopped attacking civilian positions in and around idlib.

Almost sounds like you are trying to defend hts which is the remnants of al nursa, al quaeda, a crapload of other jihad groups, as well as remnants of isis after they lost territory. They attack civilians constantly as well as military positions and hide within schools hospitals etc for the purpose of using civilians as human shields. They even took control of idlib in short order, idlib has barely any area rebel controlled, it is almost entirely hts controlled and the quicker the world stops protecting terrorists because they want assad gone the quicker the suffering in idlib will end.

Hell if they wanted peace there so bad why won't the other nations arm the rebels under the condition they use them to defeat hts instead of letting bloodthirsty jihadists run the area.

I don't ignore information, I am not privy to all the information and neither are you. Stop pretending to be a military savant because you are not. Not by a long shot.

In addition, you are a Russia supporter with pro-Russia baggage and bias.

This is what the US calls “collateral damage,” but it’s called a war crime when others do it.

You're another Russia-apologist. Bombing enemy positions in an urban setting isn't necessarily a war crime.

However, the targeted bombing of all hospitals and clinics in a war theater IS a war crime.

Note: Syrian medical institutions in Idlib supplied their location coordinates to the UN to protect from Syrian/Russian bombing. Just the opposite happened.

No, but it would be nice if the US military was held as accountable for its actions as you want Russia and Syria to be. No one was held accountable when the US massacred staff and patients in a direct attack against the Doctors Without Borders Kunduz Trauma Centre and lied about it.

Have you evidence this was an intentional act meant to "massacre" staff and patients at Kunduz Trauma Centre?

All other details aside - two of the most damning are that MSF repeatedly contacted the US military as the hospital was bombed and shot at for an hour and that there was an AC-130 gunship circling the hospital and mowing down doctors and patients fleeing the building as it was bombed. Additionally, whistleblowers have said that the pilots clearly identified the building as a hospital and questioned the legality of attacking it but were ordered to do so anyway. The military refused to release the transcripts of those communications publicly or even to Congress and repeatedly lied about what happened.

Oh I don’t know, Fledermaus. What IS the intent of using an AC-130 to shoot doctors running out of the hospital you’ve just bombed?

Someone ran out of a building....

A building purportedly with Taliban in it.

Perhaps you can show me the markings that identify this as a hospital.

And people WERE punished for the incident....

U.S. investigation, apology, and reparations

Eleven days after the attack, MSF said an American tank entered the hospital: "Their unannounced and forced entry damaged property, destroyed potential evidence and caused stress and fear." The tank smashed the gate of the hospital complex. The MSF executives who happened to be in the hospital at the time were told that the tank was carrying a US-Nato-Afghan team investigating the attack. The soldiers were unaware of any remaining MSF staff at the site and were in the process of doing damage assessment.[48][49][50][51][52]

On 25 November 2015, General John F. Campbell, the American commander in Afghanistan, spoke about the results of the investigation and described the incident as "the direct result of avoidable human error, compounded by process and equipment failures."[53] Campbell said that the investigation had showed that the AC-130 gunship crew misidentified the clinic as a nearby Taliban-controlled government building.[53] The American gunship had identified the building based on a visual description from Afghan troops, and did not consult their no-strike list, which included the co-ordinates of the hospital as provided by MSF.[53] Electronic equipment malfunctions on the gunship prevented it from accessing email and images, while a navigation error meant its targeting equipment also misidentified the target buildings.[54] The aircraft fired 211 shells at the building in 29 minutes, before American commanders realized the mistake and ordered the attack to stop.[54] The report found that the MSF facility "did not have an internationally-recognized symbol to identify it as a medical facility,".[55] This finding was contested by Joe Goldstein stating that the facility had a MSF symbol on it.[56] According to the report, 12 minutes into the operation, the US military was contacted by MSF, but the faulty electronics on the plane prevented the message from getting through until the attack was over.[54]

A final report, released 29 April 2016, reaffirmed the incident as an accident, and said it thus did not amount to a war crime.[57] Sixteen members of the U.S. military were disciplined as a result of the investigation, though none were criminally charged.[58] Twelve personnel involved in the strike were punished with "suspension and removal from command, letters of reprimand, formal counseling and extensive retraining". The U.S. government said that more than 170 condolence payments had been made, $3,000 for wounded people and $6,000 for dead, and $5.7 million was set aside for the hospital's reconstruction

First of all, it doesn’t matter who is in the hospital. Bombing a hospital and shooting anyone who comes out is a war crime no matter who the patients are. Second, the location and GPS coordinates of the facility were regularly provided to the US Department of Defense and US Army in Kabul from the time it opened until it was blown up by the US. It was also clearly marked as an MSF facility by two MSF flags and the MSF symbol on the building. General Campbell lied and changed his account of what happened no less than 4 times before settling on the steaming pile you posted above.

Not exactly correct...

And Campbell may have lied.

That DOES NOT change the fact the US admitted responsibility and punished service members...

No one was held accountable when the US massacred staff and patients in a direct attack against the Doctors Without Borders Kunduz Trauma Centre and lied about it.

I marked the only lie in this thread....
