Trump Administration Says It Will Negotiate With Iran With ‘No Preconditions’

6/2/19
BELLINZONA, Switzerland — In a second major softening of American policy toward Iran in recent days, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said Sunday that the Trump administration was ready to negotiate with the country’s clerical leaders with “no preconditions.” The statement followed President Trump’s comment last week that he was ready to talk to Iranian leaders and was not seeking regime change, overruling a longtime goal of his national security adviser. Mr. Pompeo’s statement also re-calibrated his earlier position that the United States would not lift sanctions on Iran unless it complied with a dozen sweeping demands, suggesting that those demands could be part of negotiations instead of preconditions. Iran’s leaders consider the demands unacceptable.

Mr. Trump appears to be trying to walk a tightrope on Iran policy. He has told aides he wants to avoid a war, yet his top foreign policy officials are pressing him to amplify a “maximum pressure” campaign against Iran that relies on sanctions and shows of military force. “I think the administration is trying to de-escalate tensions to accommodate the president’s recent statements that he’d like to negotiate with Iran,” said Dalia Dassa Kaye, a Middle East analyst at the RAND Corporation, a research group. “But the problem is Secretary Pompeo’s statement is still talking about negotiations only when Iran starts acting like a ‘normal’ country. That type of language is not likely to entice the Iranians to the table, especially as maximum pressure policies continue on the ground.”

The old carrot and stick approach. Not very avant garde. I doubt the mixed messages will entice the Iranians to cave.

Negotiation! It’s what Trump does! Japan, China, Mexico, Canada, North Korea, Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador......

He ****ed up the Iran Nuclear Treaty just so he could go back and 'save it' a year later. That's how Trump operates. He destroys, causes chaos, then goes back and fixes it and takes the credit for it all. That's why nothing is getting done in Washington. Every day is ground hog day.

Interview I watched on PBS related to Iran's stance on this.

The Iranian Foreign Minister said if the United States and Europe does not fulfill their obligations under the Iran Nuclear Deal, then Iran does have a right to continue to enrich uranium, citing a provision in the agreement which says “if one side does not fulfill its obligation, the other side may…reduce its commitments.”

He added that “one side” cannot benefit from the “positive outcomes” of the Iran Nuclear deal without doing “their part of the bargain,” but said it is not in Iran’s strategic interest to build a nuclear weapon.President Trump fulfilled a campaign promise last year when the United States pulled out of the Iran Nuclear Deal.

This what happens when US Foreign policy is based on the binary Trump principles of, "talk loudly but carry a little stick", and "it is important to undo anything former Presdent Obama was connected with". Meanwhile the lethal spider of Saudi Arabia grows stronger and the authoritarian regimes of Egypt and Turkey become more deeply entrenched.

Negotiate with Iran in good faith after lifting the sanctions reimposed after Trump's abrogation of the deal but give Iran a full and fair warning that to get the USA back into the JPOC, Iranian missile development and proxy force use must be settled too. Give a two year window for negotiations and if they fail, then slam the door on Iran with the full knowledge that you will be driving into the Arms of both Russia and China.

Cheers.
