Turkey orders re-run of Istanbul election after Erdogan party defeat

Turkey's main opposition Republican People's Party (CHP), which narrowly won the mayor's office in the country's largest city, called the ruling a "plain dictatorship."

5/7/19
Turkey’s main opposition on Monday accused authorities of “plain dictatorship” after officials ordered a re-run of elections in Istanbul where President Recep Tayyip Erdogan's party suffered a surprise defeat. CHP Deputy Chairman Onursal Adiguzel said it appeared “illegal” to defeat Erdogan’s AK Party after an election panel annulled the March 31 result. "This system that overrules the will of the people and disregards the law is neither democratic nor legitimate,” he wrote on Twitter. “This is plain dictatorship." The CHP won in the capital Ankara and Istanbul for the first time in 25 years, in a major setback for Erdogan, who himself served as Istanbul's mayor in the 1990s. Ekrem Imamoglu was declared the winner and has taken up office as mayor of Istanbul.

Like any dictator, Erdogan will keep repealing election results until he obtains the results he desires.

I laughed a bit, but it is pretty pathetic how far Erdogan will go doing the most obvious things to stay in power.

And we can safely conclude any effort, even is just hype alone, to move towards democracy is flat out dead.

Doesn't the US still support these lunatics?

Britain needs to do the same with our Brexit referendum mired in criminality. Revoke article 50, and re-run the vote, this time requiring a clear plan.

Doesn't the US still support these lunatics?

Trump does, but that support is contingent on Ankara scrapping the Russian S-400 deal and instead buying the US Patriot system. Trumps infamous 'transactional politics'.

However, Erdogan says no dice to Trump and is edging ever closer to Putin. If not in name, Turkey is a quasi-religious (Adalet ve Kalkınma Partisi/AK) dictatorship in deed.
