Cumhuriyet journalists, employees sent back to prison: report

Turkish journalists reporting to prison.

4/25/19
Turkey has sent six Cumhuriyet journalists and media staff to prison after their sentences were upheld by an appeals court, the Turkish media reported. More than twenty people stood trial last year in a case related to the publications of the Cumhuriyet newspaper. The trial concluded with 18 defendants, journalists as well as media executives and staff, being handed down various prison sentences. A Turkish appeals court on Feb. 19 upheld the sentences, meaning those who received less than five years will have to start serving their sentences, while others with longer sentences will be able to lodge an appeal with a higher court. Accordingly, Musa Kart, Mustafa Kemal Güngör, Emre İper, Hakan Kara, Önder Çelik and Güray Öz have been sent to prison on Thursday to serve the remainder of their sentences. A press freedom report by the Council of Europe recently qualified Turkey as the world’s largest jailer of journalists. The country was also ranked 157th out of 180 countries in the 2019 World Press Freedom Index published by Reporters Without Borders.

More journalists are jailed in Turkey than anywhere else in the entire world. Let that sink in.

I'm shocked, anyone else?

The usual crappy satire from you. Nothing shocking there.

Because you rarely add anything of substance yourself. Just a daily thread on something Russia, or Turkey, or someone else did with a one liner thought from you but absolutely no suggestion on what the US, or anyone should really do about it.

Even if your source article makes the suggestion, you rarely acknowledge it yourself in agreement or offer your own solution to the issue.

So it comes off as a complaint totally devoid of wanting to really discuss anything about it.

What would be shocking is you actually starting a thread with the intention of discussing what anyone should do about what Turkey does to journalists (or any other nation you frequently complain about for whatever they did.)

When was the last thread YOU published? You like to criticize others, but never dare to put yourself on the line here with threads.

Just a smug drive-bye when a thread doesn't meet your seemingly lofty yet never attempted expectations. How convenient.
