CAIRO (Reuters) - Sudan’s President Omar al-Bashir has stepped down and consultations are under way to set up a transitional council to run the country, government sources and a provincial minister said on Thursday. The minister of production and economic resources in North Darfur Adel Mahjoub Hussein told the Dubai-based al-Hadath TV that “there are consultations to form a military council to take over power after President Bashir stepped down”.

The International Criminal Court (ICC) alleges that al-Bashir bore individual criminal responsibility for genocide, crimes against humanity, and war crimes committed since 2003 in Darfur.

Unfortunately for Sudan, military rule will not be much of an improvement over al-Bashir. They also participated in genocide in Darfur.

Rogue Valley:

While the ouster of Omar al-Bashir is good news and the suspension of the Sudanese constitution by the military junta is ominous to say the least, there is other good news too. The role of women in leading the protests which finally drove al-Bashir from power/office was a powerful societal force, hitherto unseen in Sudanese history. The determination of the political, grassroots "opposition" to remove al-Bashir and all of his corrupt regime, including most of the sitting junta presently in power, is a good thing. The fact that determined civil protest operating in the face of a murderous regime which has killed many protestors still managed to succeed should be a lesson to the world that people can change their own governments no matter how hell-bent they are in holding on to power. This is also a good argument against foreign government driven regime change. The protests and changes have worked and, if sustained in the face of the new junta, can remove most of the vestiges of the al-Bashir regime, at a terrible cost in protestors lives no doubt.

Cheers.
