I read the posting rules which seem really potentially strict if discussing any serious political issue, yet I understand the need to try and maintain a more rational discussion and I will try my best to do so.

I've really come to the conclusion lately that war with Iran is not avoidable and that the longer we wait the stronger Iran will become when we finally do end up in a full scale war with Iran. I do believe that core to this conflict is Islamic Extremism and I don't see how to discuss this without saying that. This is not at all to say that all Muslims are Extremists. There are extremists of all religions and extremists who have no religion at all. I also do not believe that ALL Iranians want a war with the USA.

But, the Iranians in control, to the best of my ability to tell, very, very strongly want a war with the USA and with Israel and they are 100% set on a course to make it happen. Iran appears to be working really hard to gain enough influence and to build up enough military force to actively launch a full scale attack on Israel and they are making progress, despite Israels attacks to destroy Iranian points of military buildup close to them. I have listened to a number of Iranians preaching how great they are and how they are going to crush the USA and Israel; which under some circumstances I could ignore, but the people preaching this are working really, really hard to build up their military to carry out their threats and they seem to be increasingly trying to provoke war doing things like firing rockets into Israel.

I am not a fan of war, but if we are on a course of inevitable war with Iran, I don't think we should play around with it. I did not consider Afghanistan a threat to the USA, I did not consider Iraq a threat to the USA, but Iran I do consider a threat to the USA. Iran is extending its influence strongly into both Afghanistan and Iraq, as well as Turkey, Lebanon, Syria, Pakistan, UAE, Qatar, and Yemen. This is all with the apparent goal of destroying Israel and the USA.

I find that extremely disturbing and something we should not ignore.

So, should we move towards full scale war with Iran?

Because it sure looks like Iran is moving towards full scale war with us.

Short answer?

NO!

It is a slippery slope when one tries to argue striking first because of fear someone else might do it to us.

That has been the justification for every unjust war in history.

Iran is no match for the USA, at least not at this time. We should do our best to prevent them from getting nuclear weapons, but it is unlikely they won't do so eventually.

So we should also prepare every technological defense we can. Trump's Space Force is a good start IMO.

But IMO, we represent the right, and doing wrong to protect the right is not the way to go.

Furthermore, despite their distrust of the American government, which has some valid roots due to the 1953 CIA assisted coup, the Iranian people nevertheless have a distinct and proven fondness for the American people, and for Westerners in general.
Of all the islamic states in the region, Iranian people might possibly have the potential for a lot of goodwill were it not for the political tensions that beset both sides.

This is not just me waxing poetic or wishfully projecting nonsense, it's well known, sort of an open secret that almost any diplomat with a fair amount of experience knows as fact. Iranians dislike our foreign policy but they like Western culture and many of them aspire to be more democratic, given half a chance, and they believe most Americans to be decent and likable people.

To set off a war with Iran would be a waste of incalculable proportions, an extremely tragic act of irrevocable bridge burning for little or no gain, and would instead forever cement permanent hostility toward America and the West. It would forever set the Iranian people on a path to affinity with radicalized Shi'ite islamist jihad and terrorism, thus doubling what is already an overwhelming terrorism issue with radicalized Sunni Wahabbists. We would now be faced with ZERO good options in the Middle East, and would most likely send them rushing into the welcoming arms of the Russians for all time.

Our issues with the corrupt Shi'ite mullahs is increasingly troublesome and is growing by the day but the mullahs do not enjoy widespread support among the Iranian people, who could possibly be incentivized to seek a secular revolution and even possibly an alliance with the West, given the right circumstances.

This is not an attempt to minimize the troubles we have in the region, it is just a call to take an unbiased look at the proper perspective. The chance for diplomatic resolutions may be somewhat remote, but it is not impossible by any stretch.

no, i don't support a war with Iran.

If you want to waste hundreds of thousands of lives, both American and Iranian, for no good reason sure, go for it. If you're a remotely sane individual, no.

Honestly, we are too far into debt and have too many problems from Russia and China to afford another war. We need to find another solution.

Pretty much put the name down for any country on the planet earth for this question and my answer is no. It would be nice to quit wasting money and lives on trying to "spread democracy". We have had this same stupid foriegn policy since WW2 and it has been a failure time and again. Rather than blowing up bridges in the middle east it would be better to use that money to build some in Michigan. Our tax dollars should be spent on fixing OUR problems, not the rest of the world.

The ML rules on threads in this genre so strictly prohibit free speech as to make responses here meaningless. So a short answer is more than is warranted. That said, we are at war/in conflict with Iran in Syria especially (and elsewhere). Iran has already lost and the outcome is little in doubt.

Iran has not attacked any other country for longer than anyone here can remember so to paint it as a war monger is quite bizarre imo

The facts to me point towards the deliberate and increasing poking/demonisation of Iran to elicit a response that would be used as a pretext for an attack on it. The ramping up of sanctions to attack its economy are soon to kick in and are just war against Iran by other means anyway.

Should Iran be attacked ?

Nope it should be left to carry out its affairs without being molested and constantly discredited. The sanctions have no real or truly justifiable basis imo

A war with Iran could spread rapidly and present the world with the colossal problem of a more global conflict. Who in their right mind would want that ?

Iran is not moving towards full-scale war with the USA at all. It is expanding its influence in the Middle East and South Asia by means of both soft power and through the use of irregular/terrorist military proxies. There is no inevitability of war with Iran right now. Iran is not a direct threat to America and its indirect threat of greater influence is a direct result of the US invading and collapsing the Iraqi-Hussein Regime which acted as a bulwark against Iranian power in the region up until 2003.

Israel is more than capable of defending itself from growing Iranian influence and Iranian proxies in the region. Israel has been actively suppressing and destroying Iranian proxy forces in Syria for several years and has killed many Iranian irregulars and destroyed a great deal of Iranian infrastructure in Syria designed to supply Iranian proxies in Iraq, Syria, Lebanon and points west. Israel is also indirectly attacking Iran through its support of the Saudi/UAE military campaigns in Yemen which are in part an attempt to contain Iranian influence and military proxies on the Saudi Arabian Peninsula.

The real reason behind most calls to war in the US against Iran is the incitement often done by lobbiests representing certain Middle Eastern powers anxious for the US military to do their dirty work. The Saudi/UAE coalition are failing to do properly their military containment in Yemen and causing a human catastrophe there. The other group of lobbiests are attempting to reduce the financial burden on Israel in its long-term campaign against Iranian power in the post-Hussein Middle East. But all of these states are more than able to bear the costs of blood and treasure if they want to battle Iran. So why should the USA get involved directly with Iran and risk escalating the conflict by attacking Iran and probably drawing in Russian and other outside powers into a wider regional or global conflict? The USA spent 4.6 trillion dollars of tax-payer money since 2001 financing and fighting stalemated wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and is now spending almost a trillion dollars per annum on military and related national security expenditures. Your economy cannot sustain such spending, except by run-away deficit financing. Consequently you have added 25%-30% to your total debt accumulated since 1776 in the last 17 years of wars of adventure in which you won the combat but failed to win the peace. War is not working as an effective tool to solve your foreign policy problems so perhaps it is time to consider other approaches than military ones. Militarism is only serving itself and its own agenda of continuing military expenditures and expansion of military resources, it is not solving your international diplomatic problems nor advancing your publicly stated international policy goals.

Rather than doing less with more military resources, maybe it is time to do more with less military resources by relying on other approaches to dealing with Iran, like talking to them and negotiating a mutually agreed upon and verifiable containment strategy in return for Iran getting relief from the perpetual threat of US-backed military attacks and crippling economic sanctions which have plagued them since 1979-80. With the military pressure off the Iranian regime, its ability to scare and control its very young and increasingly dissatisfied population (which is far less radical and far more pro-USA than the ruling theocracy and aging Islamic revolutionaries) could bring about evolutionary and very positive change there and make a renewed Iran a potentially very useful and attractive ally for America, down the road.

What color is the sky in your world?

The answer to your question is NO, that's utterly ****ing asinine and only an idiot with no understanding of geopolitics would even propose such a preposterous idea without a good reason to, which you have not given other than the fever dreams of John Bolton's leather slave.

With due respect to the thread writer, why anybody would call for such war? We should learn our lessons from history, Does Iraq get any better? Wars with regimes based on Religious ideology is endless. More peaceful solutions needed.

Silly humans. We ARE at war with Iran (and we should be for good reason). The outcome is inevitable. You're just clueless as to what is in process. And they deserve everything coming to them ten-fold.

Anyone who supports a war with Iran MUST enlist and fight the war themselves. Obviously the rightwingers have learnt NOTHING from the disastrous, illegal and costly Iraq war. Where are those frigging WMDs????

FairSociety:

If by "We" you mean the USA, please cite the duly passed declaration of war or a congressional authorisation which has placed the USA in a state of war with Iran. Please also list and possibly explain the "good reasons" for why America should be at war with Iran. Then please define the inevitable outcome which you allude to in your post #16.

If I am clueless, so be it. But having travelled through Iran and Afghanistan a long time ago (pre-Islamic Revolution and pre-Soviet Invasion respectively) I'll wager that I have a better understanding of the region and its politics than the average American and perhaps you yourself.

Joan Davis:

It may seem overly cynical, but history teaches us that in most cases it is the rich or politically powerful, older aged, ideological or religious zealots who start wars for policy or profit, it is the ruthless professional or highly motivated amateur officers who make the decisions about how to prosecute the wars and it is poor, young men (and now women too) who fight, die or are maimed fighting these wars. Those that advocate for wars seldom fight in those wars they promote unless they are fools or heroes deluded by vain-glory and romanticism. The people who effectively start most of the wars are far too powerful to be forced by a toothless democracy or any up-start citizen-activists into actually fighting them and would never allow themselves or their immediate loved-ones to be placed in such peril if they could help it. If anyone seriously made such a policy push then they would be deemed by the militarists as a real and present danger to the war-hawk camp and would be dealt with accordingly.

Cheers?
