US General: Russia Trying to 'Undercut' Progress in Afghanistan

US General John Nicholson

Russia is not giving up on efforts to destabilize Afghanistan and drive divisions between the United States and its coalition partners, according to the outgoing commander of U.S. forces in the country. The commander of U.S. Forces-Afghanistan and of Operation Resolute Support, General John Nicholson, is scheduled to step down Sunday after serving in the position for more than two years. "We know that Russia is attempting to undercut our military gains and years of military progress in Afghanistan, and make partners question Afghanistan's stability," Nicholson said in an email to Voice of America, following on questions from his August 22 briefing with Pentagon reporters. "It is no secret that Russia seeks any opportunity it can find to drive a wedge between the United States and our Central Asian partners, including Afghanistan," Nicholson added. U.S. and Afghan officials have previously accused Russia of meddling in Afghanistan by providing Taliban insurgents with both weapons and training.

As always, Moscow is no friend of the US or of Afghan stability.

Sounds familiar...

17 years of US incompetence in Afghanistan, think of that, 17 years - and people seek to blame Russia for impeding progress.

Russia is not going to help the US any longer. You don't deserve it. May Afghanistan continue to drain your resources, money and manpower until such time as you withdraw, second best to the Taleban.

Only reason we didn't get to see 39 years of Kremlin incompetence in Afghanistan lies in Russia having thrown in the towel 29 years ago. But sour loser that she is, still unable to get over that one.

Well duh... it weakens the US even more. It amazes me how dense Americans are when it comes to the rest of the world.

Throwing in the towel in Afghanistan is actually the smart thing to do.

Maybe the US general was able to keep a straight face when he made those comments. Go back to the Soviet occupation of Afghanistan and what did the US do ? Sorry no prizes for giving the right answer here.

And as soon as the Soviets left the US moved in to " stabilize " Afghanistan , right ? Oh, that's right , everyone left and the rival factions carried on fighting. A seed of Islamic Jihadism flourished there and in Pakistan with many of those involved going on to other conflicts involving Muslims and also to terrorist attacks.

People , glass houses , stone throwing...............

of course they are... wasn't that exactly what the CIA did when Russia tried to invade Afghanistan. Besides between Iran, Russia and Pakistan, Afghanistan is never going to have peace... just send in the mercs and let them maintain a semblemce of peace in exchange for mining resources. (whatever is there)
