There are only two ways that the diplomatic rift between the U.S. and Turkey can end: a compromise that salvages the relationship as best possible, or a complete rupture with devastating consequences both for Turkey's economy and America's regional strategic interests. Either way, there is no going back to the way things were.....

Both bully-boy regime's are objectionable, but this is a fight Erdogan can't win.

Once again ... (listen up Trump) the US needs to repatriate all US nuclear warheads stored at the Incirlik airbase immediately. Erdogan is 100% untrustworthy.

Take our nukes back, close the base entirely and send NATO a list of reasons why Turkey should be booted from the organization.

Since Erdogan's election, Turkey's application for EU membership has receded further and further from the criteria. A demagogue with a conservative religious base.
 
I think like the Chinese, Erdogan is completely misjudging American resolve. If he doesn't want to cave in he should carry the consequences for now and hope the US elect a more accommodating president in 2020 that will overlook his kidnapping of US citizens, because current government obvioulsy won't

Well, for starters they are unjustly holding an American citizen for a crime he didn't commit. But worse than that, Turkey is aiding and supporting the Muslim Brotherhood...a terrorist organization.

First of all you do not know whether this man committed any crime, and secondly show us where they support the Muslim Brotherhood.

Our 2nd highest diplomat in Turkey has determined the man's innocence, based on all of the evidence. I'll take his word for it.

In regard to Turkey and the Muslim Brotherhood, it is well known that Turkey has given them support since the Muslim Brotherhood was ousted from Egypt. Many news and analysis organizations have written about it. Here is one of them:

Since the June 30 revolution in Egypt, Turkey has become the regional hub for the Muslim Brotherhood’s international organization. Istanbul has played host to many meetings planning what steps are to be taken against the military-backed Egyptian government after the July 3 ouster of President Mohammad Mursi.

These Ankara sponsored events were part of Turkey’s attempt to outlaw “the foreign legitimacy” of the new Egyptian leadership, a move made in addition to its previous role as a political boot camp after the January 25 revolution.

Turkey’s defense of the Muslim Brotherhood, and the tears of Recep Tayyip Erdogan when the Egyptian security forces attempted to storm the sit-in of Rabaa al-Adawiya, proved Erdogan’s ties with the Muslim Brotherhood’s international organization and their mutual interest in restoring “the era of Islamic rule,” seen by the Brotherhood as the basis for protecting “the Islamic nation.”

Does a diplomat determine a mans innocence or a court of law? The Muslim Brotherhood has been active in Turkey for many years, so why the retaliation now? What trump is doing is like cracking an egg with a sledge hammer- American businesses will suffer and so will taxpayers. All done to please right wing christians.

And what, pray tell, is going to hurt American businesses and taxpayers when the US's 32nd largest (better said "smallest") trading partner goes under?

Quite apart from the right wing Christians nonsense.
 
Turkey needs to simmer down and remember its place. Even if we were similar, our despot is better than theirs.
