Young Arabs now prefer Russia over the US as a 'partner'

5/8/18

A majority of young people in the Middle East and North Africa have said they feel that Russia is now a closer partner to them than the United States. The ASDA'A Burson-Marsteller Arab youth survey was launched in 2008 and is the largest survey of its kind of the Middle East's largest demographic, a region notable for its predominantly young population. In the 2018 poll, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Saudi Arabia continue to be seen as the biggest allies to young Arabs. But the United States has fallen to number 11 in the ranking, falling out of the top five countries for the very first time. The survey is conducted using 3,500 face-to-face interviews with young Arabs between 18 and 24. An equal amount of men and women have been interviewed from Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries, North African countries, the Levant, and Palestinian territories.Russia, which has made a big play in recent years to improve relations with some Middle Eastern countries, now finds itself the fourth most popular country among young Arabs.

The choice for Russia over the U.S. for young Arabs is particularly pronounced in the "Levant + Other" category which included respondents from Jordan, Iraq, Lebanon, Palestinian Territories, and Yemen. Across that region, 31 percent chose Russia as their top ally while only 15 percent opted for the United States. The survey concluded that there has been a "dramatic shift" in the last two years in Arab youth's perceptions of the U.S. Authors went as far as to say that a solid majority of young Arabs now consider the United States to be an adversary, rather than ally. Just under three-quarters of young Arabs view the election of Donald Trump, and his presidency, as a negative for the Middle East and North African region. The rise of the so-called Islamic State, the global financial crisis, civil war in Syria and the rise of the Sunni-Shia divide are viewed even more negatively that the current White House administration.

I can readily understand, and indeed it is expected, that the US under Donald Trump has lost currency in the ME. Acts such as the "Muslim travel ban" and transferring the US embassy in Israel to Jerusalem are not popular with Arabs in any MENA country. Trumps insults do birth consequences in MENA populations. On the other hand, I find the rise of Russia a bit perplexing. The horrific war crimes of the Putin regime in Syria are well known to everyone in the region. If the US is considered beneath the hospital-bombing Russians, it is indeed an indictment of US MENA policy under Donald Trump

Fine. Let them have each other. The middle east has been a boon doggie since...what, WW1? Every "friend" we had there has either tried to subvert the US, or outright attack us, in that time. I could give you a laundry list so long it would exceed the post limit.

And the Japanese & South Koreans are looking more to China, than the U.S.

Isn't more great, grand?

Trouble is - when you let your enemies form friendships & alliances, as a bloc they become for formidable.

Remember, nation states don't have "friends"; they have "interests".

I'll wait until the statistics and polls are out on how many young Arabs go to Russia for their studies.

Yeah...I'm not worried about Russia (white, Catholic orthodox) trying to meddle with the ecclesiastical governments of the Mid East. Like I said, let them have each other. 50 years from now, no one will care who helped who and who did what, but the costs and payments on those will still be with us. It's important in life to learn to recognize a bad investment and pull out of it. Write that down.

Why young arabs prefer russia? Well it might be because every country america has intervened in in the middle east has been left in chaos, while the main country now russia is intervening in is bringing stability to chaos brought by american and other countries proxies. Also I am trying to find the horrifying war crimes putin committed there, if the western and arab allies had not started a proxy war there, there would be no isis running around the country, no hundreds of thousands dead.

Oh here is the other part, libya, which the us and the west in some form or another used proxies, then intervened under a humanitarion pretense, problem is as soon as the leader was overthrown we pretty much abandoned it, the country still has no unified govt but rather one internationally recognized govt and a bunch of warring militias holding sections of the country. The fact our humanitarian efforts pretty much died with the leader prove we did not care about human life or how many died or suffered, we simply wanted to overthrow govts.

Closer to Russia I guess...

Now wait. They didn't say they wouldn't use the U.S. to benefit themselves. They will just laugh at us because we let them do it.

Yup. We should just pull every single US military out of the middle east. If they want to blow each other up, let them.

I have been to the middle east and I hate to admit it, everything america has done in the middle east has caused death and destruction, as has france and britain. Prior to ww1 this constant fighting was not the norm, it became so after ww1 when imperialist countries used imperialized ideas to rip up borders that had worked for years and re write them in a way that was not compatible for them. What should have happened was britain and france disposing of the empire but letting the borders be with the exception of the palestine mandate as that was a long time promise rather than a whim.

The otttomen empire before they went crazy and full genocidal in the end managed to keep religious groups from nonstop warfare, keep religious sects and tribes from committing genocide, and kept general peace and rule of law. Some of the most chaotic times in middle east history was towards the end of the ottoman empire around the 1880's ish to to now, and the conquest of islam through war, which happenned quite a long time before, so for quite a long time inbetween that region was stable.

Don't hold your breath. Where do you think those 'statistics and polls' will come from? Certainly not the royalty and arisocracy in the medieval tyrannies the US deals with.
