What happens next is not so clear, as a cascade of wars might follow with N. Korea, the wider Middle East and China at the same time. These Neocons like Bolton and Pompeo are manic militarists who want wars for both ideological and economic reasons and they are not particular about the winnability of such wars or the cost in American lives and treasure such wars entail. Welcome to the forever-war.

As much as this country hates Trump and KNOWS that Bolton is nothing but trouble, do you actually think that Sarah Huckabee Sanders is going to stand at a microphone have a snowball's chance in hell of selling a war to US in Korea or Iran?

I am going to assume at some point the left will stop seeing every Trump move as The End Times, but there is no sign of that yet.

Did President Bush the Younger get the people's consent to invade Iraq in 2003? Did President Obama get the people's consent to invade northeastern Syria in 2015/2016? No. Remember the millions who marched and who opposed the war in both the USA and in the UK and the wider world in 2003? Their voices were discounted and their calls for restraint were ignored as the juggernaut of war rolled over them while the mainstream media played up the contrived threat of ersatz WMD's in Iraq and the fantastical connections between Hussein's secular Ba'athist Iraq and the demonic spectre of al-Qaeda. The people's consent is no longer needed in the face of a timid and complicit Congress and a corporate conglomerate-controlled mainstream media which has so much to gain from cheerleading for yet another war.

The very notion of what war is and how it should be conducted has changed so much in the almost 75 years since the end of WWII that people don't even recognise that their country and its full-time, all volunteer and professional military is at war or shaping the terrain for conflict in 138 countries around the world from over 800 foreign bases both acknowledged and covert. You're at war in Yemen, did many Americans notice? You're at war in the Horn of Africa, did many Americans notice? You're at war in Saharan and Northern Africa, did many Americans notice? You're at war in Syria, did any Americans notice? You may soon be at war with Turkey in Syria, have any Americans balked at that? Your President and his war cabinet have threatened both conventional war and nuclear war with North Korea, have Americans balked at that? Both the Obama and Trump administrations have threatened war with China without pushback by Congress and the American people. The consent of the people and/or their duly elected representatives is no longer a prerequisite for America to wage war either overtly or covertly anymore.

Carl Von Clausewitz famously argued that war was an extension of policy by other means. But that is no longer true in the modern era of post-Westphalian conflict. Now war is a continuation of business by other means and the lines between war and peace have been so blurred that the distinction is now meaningless. That is the now nearly thirty year old paradigm of forever-war which has applied since the collapse of the Soviet Union and the estivation of the Cold War. But cold winds are blowing and Turkish grey wolves, Eurasian red bears, Eastern scaled dragons and and Persian lions are preparing to meet the onslaught of the militarist troika of America, Israel and Saudi Arabia as they attempt to reshape the Middle East and even large parts of Asia to their own liking, regardless of the cost in human lives and world treasure. The containment of Eurasia and the ringing of Eurasia with bands of military steel and economic interdiction is what is at play here and the stakes are monumental to the modern-day princes who would control world trade and the international order. Three of the four would-be-horsemen of the apocalypse are now ensconced in the US administration. Can they turn General Mattis into the fourth? I believe so. Winter is coming.
