The justification for a Saudi nuclear bomb | Arab News

The Saudi crown prince dropped a significant bombshell when he announced that Saudi Arabia having a nuclear bomb was certain if Iran built its own bomb. Before this week, Saudi Arabia had followed one of two strategies in order to prevent Iran from possessing nuclear weapons; either through international pressure and negotiations, or through relying on the international community support, which we know we cannot depend on. ...
Those who oppose the prince are not to be found only in Iran; they are also there in Washington itself. Senator Ed Markey (D-MA), a member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, was quick to respond to Crown Prince Mohammed’s statement. He said: “The Saudi crown prince has emphasized what many have long suspected, that nuclear power in Saudi Arabia is more than electric power, it’s geopolitical power ... And the US should not waive the requirements of non-enrichment in any 123 agreement it may reach.” Section 123 of the US Atomic Energy Act of 1954 establishes an agreement for cooperation as a prerequisite for nuclear deals between the US and any other nation. Opponents point out that Saudi Arabia refuses to sign such a “123 agreement,” which would guarantee that it does not enrich uranium or reproduce plutonium.
In a series of related activities, it was significant that Saudi Arabia announced a week before the crown prince’s trip to Washington that it had approved its national nuclear energy program, reaffirming its commitment to international agreements, transparency and civil use. Crown Prince Mohammed’s statement was a reminder to everyone in Washington, on the eve of his trip, that silence on Iran and complacency toward it, which might allow it to produce a nuclear weapon, mean that Saudi Arabia would do the same. It would have a nuclear bomb. ...
what does such a declaration do to a shiite iran, now with its hands tied regarding the development of its own nuclear arsenal

and how does the USA respond to this newly announced sunni/saudi intent to acquire nuclear weapons capacity

We could sign a treaty to protect them in exchange for no nukes, like Ukraine.

You mean like how we protected Ukraine when crimea was annexed by russia?

Yes. We destroyed any chance of getting that deal again.

Okay... that made me laugh. Well done - sneaky snark is the best.

Saudi Arabia has now entered a loose coalition with Israel and India, both of whom have nukes.
SA is now allowing direct flights over their air space from India to Israel for the first time ever.

India has become extremely close to Israel over the last year, especially exchanging technology at the highest levels.
Israel is the fifth largest exporter of military weapons, after the USA, Russia, France and Germany.

Israel is now directly affected by the Iranian base in Syria that has Russia's fingerprints on it.
NK has been helping to rebuild, restock and elevate Syria's bio and chem weapons with Russia supervising.

There's too much more on Syria, like Turkey cleansing the very Kurds dying for the USA against Daesh.
You could make a RISK board of just Syria, let alone the Middle East ...

Imagine the thought of this World having wasted a quadrillion dollars on weapons of war before it's all over.

Iran is adhering to the 5 + 1 deal according to everyone, the same deal the CinC wants to tear up.
The deal that SA currently can't use as a pretense to go nuke.
The same deal we'll be lucky to get with NK.

The two problems are what's not included in the deal.
Iran's continued destabilizing effect in the Middle East.
The progression of Iran's ICBMs.

SA has all the reason to be fearful of Iran backed up by Russia, the ultimate 'bad actor'.
SA doesn't need nukes if/when it comes to that.
They've now got Israel and India.
(The two apocalyptic sides are settling in.)

Justabubba:

Saudi Arabia wants a war against Iran. But it does not want to fight it itself. Thus it wants to draw Israel and America into a situation in which either or both countries feel compelled to attack Iran either directly by military means or by more indirect means like covert, financial, cyber-warfare and other forms of attack. This announcement is posturing by the Saudi Royal family to ratchet up tensions in the region in order to leverage war in spite of the 5+1 multilateral nuclear arms agreement signed with Iran two years ago.

Many years ago the Saudis funded the Pakistani nuclear research and weapons production programmes richly. At the time it was widely understood that Saudi Arabia was buying access to nuclear weapons technology without having the nukes on Saudi territory, which could have triggered an Israeli pre-emptive attack. If that understanding still holds today, Saudi Arabia could have nuclear weapons in very short order, but until recently the potential political cost of possessing such weapons has made keeping this capability off-shore more attractive to the Kingdom. With a political realignment closer to Egypt, Israel and a post-Obama America, the possibility of an Israeli pre-emptive strike for such Saudi utterings has diminished and it is now seen as a useful boogeyman threat to poison the international climate and to set the stage for proxy war.

This is manoeuvring by the Saudi kingdom in complicity with the American neo-Cons and the Israeli war-hawks to set the stage for attacking Iran. The US-led Coalition attack on Iraq in 2003 was a boon to Iranian political and military influence in Mesopotamia. As Iran has ascended, Israel frets and wants to give the Persians a military haircut which will humble them and which will put them back in the box.

Cheers.

Ukraine is a bit of a troubling situation. Their government changed several times, bouncing between joining NATO and the EU, then turning around and rejecting both.

It is especially hard to take much of the recent history in a linear fashion, because of Viktor Yanukovych. He is the one who rejected the joining of the Ukraine to NATO, which effectively tied the hands of the US and other nations when it came to assisting them when the Crimea was annexed. If not for his rejection of joining NATO there would have most definitely been a show of force when that happened.

Well, Saudi Arabia has long been understood to be a nuclear power by proxy based on its funding of Pakistan’s nuclear program. Some intelligence assessments over the years came to the conclusion that Saudi Arabia has an agreement with Pakistan to purchase nuclear weapons in exchange for funding most of their nuclear weapons program.
