Yesterday some news came out about assad sending forces to afrin to help the kurds, the kurds denied it and turkey talked to russia and assured syria would not do such a thing. Syria promised troops there within hours, well they actually came in under 24 hours, and turkey fired artillery at syrian troops as a warning, and the kurds admitted they were taking help from assad.

This turns the war into another twist, turkey will use this as an excuse to directly attack syrian forces, and to make it more confusing russian and american allies are joining forces. This will be worse if russia iran and shia militias back syrian forces backing kurds against turkey. I am really thinking syria is going to end up starting ww3, too many people want their way and ignore international law, and after too long people trying to control syria are going to stop paying proxies to do it and start fighting eachother directly.

You mean more mess in the Middle East filled with entangling and temporary alliances... who did not see this coming?

the folks that run OUR government have had their noses so far up other nations assholes for so many decades it's a wonder they haven't started WWIII yet but when we have a guy like Trump quarterbacking the team, then expect the unexpected. I'm still sticking to my prediction of by the end of April, 2018, Trump will have the planet engaged in a world wide nuclear war. I could be wrong; I could be right. It's a 50/50 shot ..........

Trump though seems not to be the one starting it, obama started backing away from the syria war when it because a quagmire, trump has lessened americas participation even further. The big issue is turkey, syria, iran, israel etc all demanding their own way in syria, with russia backing assad but also playing the mediator, and as much as the internet paints putin as a tough guy, putin has been very level headed and diplomatic, but as more countries keep testing how far they can push him it is only a matter of time before he stops being nice, and with the two most powerful militaries on earth being allied with factions from both sides, it is a recipe for disaster.

Screw Turkey. They need to STFU and stay on their side of the boarder. Out of the various groups in that region, the Kurds have constantly been the most honorable, reliable, brave, and oppressed, all that the same time. One of the largest groups that has no country of their own but no one wants to talk about 4x occupied Kurdistan.

Turkey will not stay ob their border, they already have warships bullying ships from cypress, they consider the whole eastern mediterrainian as their sovereign waters, and have admitted on planning to invade greece another nato member if the current party retains power.

Turkey currently views anything once owned by the ottomen empire as their rightful land, it may start with greek islands tomorrow and syria today, but after that it will be armenia israel and palestine etc, besides the war against ethnioc groups, erdogan seems to be folowing hitlers path of trying to claim former lost territories are his countries right.

It's odd that Assad forces would assist the YPG/YPJ which is a US ally.

All the more reason for us not to get involved in this mess.

Greetings, fishking. :2wave:

:agree: totally with your post, and I'm very glad that someone is finally aiding the Kurds! I will never forget that a few years ago, while various countries in the UN were wringing their hands and wasting time while debating how to help those poor Yazidi families with children who were trapped on the mountain, out of food and water, and surrounded by ISIS whose goal was to kill them all - because they didn't want to offend Erdogen, Prime Minister of Turkey! :bs: Talk about a travesty of justice! It was the brave Kurds who took it upon themselves to rescue them and lead them to safety! Kudos to them!

I guess the saying is true: "The enemy of my enemy is my friend"

Assad probably sees Kurdistan as a potential buffer zone against Turkey.

Its a smart play by Assad. If the Afrin Kurds become 100% Assad controlled then we could see a Kurdish civil war inside of the Syrian Civil war. Impossible you say? It happens in Iraq.

The Syrian Army is moving into the Afrin region but it remains to be seen if their intention is to help or harm the Kurds which are an armed rebel faction aligned to a hostile foreign power which is itself illegally occupying Syrian territory, during a time of civil war in Syria. This could snow-ball into a mess at any moment and de-conflicting flare ups will become far more difficult as a result.

It will be interesting and a bit frightening to see what happens when the Syrians arrive and if the Turks will engage them. Also, what will be the implications of allowing significant Syrian Arab Army forces west of the Euphrates, for both the US and Syria's Russian allies? The potential for greater conflict is compounded manifold with this move.

Cheers.

To note recently russia sent two su-57 jets aka t-50's aka pak-fa. Both of these are experimental jet prototypes, so most likely they are testing them in the battlefield, however them trying real world testing of their newest incomplete jet design is not too newsworthy, what is is russia sending more su-35's and su-25's to syria, given the recent issues with turkey and israel, russia is likely talking diplomacy while waiving a big stick as a warning.

Turkey has slowed down their assault so far, they have claimed they would fight syria as well, but it has shown syria iran and hezbollah joining the militias as well as russia sending more jets to syria, for turkey who has already had a hard time fighting kurds I doubt this looks good for them.
