This is 49,564th thread on this. It was because of a ruling by an international court for past sales.

Anyone find this a little odd? U.S. paid $1.3 billion to Iran two days after cash delivery - CBS News

Edit: Sorry, not a loan, a payment for a military sale.

"The money settles a dispute over a $400 million payment made in the 1970s by the U.S.-backed shah’s government for military equipment. The equipment was never delivered because of the 1979 Islamic Revolution that overthrew the shah and ended diplomatic relations between the U.S. and Iran."

Everything Irani-American, it goes back to the Shah. That simple act, allowing him to stay in the US remains a boil in the skin of the nation. I have no doubt Jimmy Carter refused to pay them since he already looked like wimp personified, and you know successive presidents had no inducement to even consider it. It's the yoke Obama must wear, the price for restoring relations.

And do you believe our relations are good with Iran now?

Wow, I typed it into search and couldn't find it. It's even showing up as breaking news today. Have you been on 49,564 different forums this morning?

I would say they are vastly improved, but that's damning with faint praise. They are better than Canada's, we have no diplomatic relations with them at all.

I feel like we've learned a lesson about believing we can change Middle Eastern attitudes. And $1.3 billion in interest sounds a bit ridiculous after all of the b.s. Iran has pulled over the years. It sounds like Obama is attempting to purchase their friendship.

The first part of that is absolutely true, although the lesson needs to be retaught with every new administration.

I am not sure that was all interest, but yeah, it runs high in my book too. Obama doesn't care about friends, he cares about image and want to be known as a peacemaker.
