What’s Old Is New Again: TWA Hotel Opens At JFK Airport – CBS New York

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — Wednesday marked the grand opening of the new TWA Hotel at John F. Kennedy Airport.

The landmark Trans World Airlines Flight Center, designed by famed architect Eero Saarinen, first opened in 1962. Now, for the first time in 20 years, it has reopened as the airport’s sole on-site hotel.

Even though I HATE staying at hotels right near airports I'd make an exception here, at least once. I'm a total sucker for nostalgia and besides, who doesn't want to drink at a bar made out of an old "Connie"?

I saw an article on the hotel back in February and told my wife I’d love to spend a night or two there. She thought it’d be a cool weekend getaway as well.

At Greenwood Lake airport there used to be a Connie that had been converted into a diner or something. When I was learning to fly back in the 80s I’d regularly hop over to Greenwood Lake from Westchester County airport to practice landing at relatively short runways surrounded by tall hills. It was odd see seeing that big bird at a small field. Never ate there unfortunately and don’t know if she’s still there or not.

Wow! How about that? I wasn't even aware it was still around.

I'm a sucker for nostalgia and old architecture. Now let's bring back the SST! :thumbs:

I remember when it first opened, futuristic architecture for airports. But it didn't set a trend. It wasn't that efficient, not well maintained, a bit on the dirty side as TWA experienced its financial ups and downs.

Gov. Andy Cuomo recently caught some flack for calling it sexy. But he may be right. Hookers who regularly rotate into the airport environs from elsewhere, to service business travelers, are advertising their availability the new hotel. The Radison was their hotspot, but this one is now in the forefront. Next will probably be the IAB terminal repurposing. It is being replaced with a spanking new much larger, long overdue, international terminal connected directly to the train to plane line express into Manhattan. A good idea for a subway line barely used but economic and convenient. Far more speedy than a cab or bus. Previously requiring a link via a light monorail system traveling over the Van Wyck Expressway.
