While I'm careful and aware of my surroundings, Monterrey seems pretty safe. I don't leave the hotel between 11 PM and 6 AM as not to take any chances, but during the day, everything seems quite normal. If you want a low-risk place to get to know Mexico, this is a good choice.

I have read that the Mexican people are really friendly and nice.

I have also read that some? many? most? police officers may demand a "mordida" ("bite" or bribe) even if you have not broken any law.

A while back, I read that some male police officers had been replaced by female officers, on the premise that females were less corrupt than the males.

Personally, I would be afraid to visit Mexico because of the reported cases of police shakedowns.

On the other hand, millions of Americans visit Mexico every year and do not seem to encounter serious problems. (And hundreds of thousands of retired Americans positively love the place -- and the people.)

Best wishes!

I visited Mexico City and wasn’t asked for a bribe by cops.

However I was on foot and not driving. And besides taxis are very inexpensive, you can tip 100% of the meter fare and still be well below what a comparable ride is the States.

I wouldn’t worry about it too much, usually bribes are not expensive in Mexico and in any event unless you’re driving you’ll probably not have to be worried about it, just don’t be stupid.
