Many have developed their own family traditions for this end of summer holiday. Shopping the sales, parades, barbecues, stay home and avoiding the amateurs, binge drinking in remembrance of frat parties of yore, last seasonal days at the beach, combinations thereof, whatever.

Some years ago my oldest son bought a grand old house in the neighborhood, almost a mansion, crumbling from neglect and decay, for a song, and over the years he refurbished and rehabilitated the house and grounds, building a lovely barbecue area in the rear yard, for entertaining family, friends and neighbors, finalizing it last summer with a fire pit. Establishing a barbecue tradition for family, etal, on Labor Day. This year, he finished his man cave in the basement. Seating for 20 or so, a high quality sound system, a popcorn machine, a beverage stand, a little stage, classic movie posters on the walls (the original King Kong, The Searchers, Harold Lloyd, etc) and one of those 6' Sony 4K UHD TV's. Of course, it has been co-opted by the women and kids in the family, but what in this life isn't theirs? Had I bought the house and grounds I would have brought in the wrecking ball, and built two sizable houses on the lot for a tidy profit.

This year he's combining a barbecue with a streaming event. I digress for a moment, my wife and I watched Kevin Costner's "Yellowstone" series, the only series I watched on TV this season. My wife's idea. Not bad, not great, but surprisingly caught a growing audience as the season progressed, a winner in the ratings. With interestingly plotted twists for the almost soap opera of the modern western genre. Kevin's had his ups and downs over the years. Who could forget Waterworld, The Postman? And we want to forget them. He did a nice turn with Robert Duval and Annette Bening in Open Range, already almost a classic western for fans of the genre.

Kevin is no longer the boyish charmer of Silverado, a cliche western with every cliche, destroyed on the cutting room floor by a studio fearful of its length. He's a mature, somewhat grizzled man image of the American West. The women, younger, in between and older, think he's very "hawt." Thus the decision behind the choice for my son's streaming event.

Grandpa is bringing beer and root beer.

That's what we'll be doing the end of summer holiday. Eating, drinking, watching TV, with family, friends and neighbors. Sounds like most days these days. :)

What will you all be doing?

Working, of course if you mean on Monday. Today we are having some folks over to watch college football, eat, drink and be merry - it is also my girlfriend's birthday.

 Might want to keep the kids outside playing ball if you are going to be streaming Yellowstone. Definitely not family friendly.

Can't wait to see how it continues next season.

My favorite character so far? Beth. She's a badass.

As far as Labor Day, I'm doing nothing special. Staying as far away from the beach as I can. These people get crazy around the holidays.

Wish her a happy birthday from me.

Working on labor day, so apropos.

It’s my Grandson’s second birthday today. Tomorrow We are harvesting tomatoes and then making sauce and canning.
Mon favourite time of year.
Enjoy!

Getting the kids to stay indoors is an impossibility. Plus the last thing they want to do is be with the adults unless ice cream is being served. Then they don't care who they are with. The older ones have their own plans for the most part, the younger will be creating holy terror in the back yard, the front yard, with their accomplices, the family dogs. Frisbees and small drones will be flying. They will be armed with nerf and water blasters. We will be hearing screams of "We need more batteries." It is definitely not a family friendly series. And the kids in our family are constantly berating the adults for acting "disgusting" when they kiss or hold hands in front of them, god forbid a hug between adults.

Beth is way Kewl. :)

Holidays are for the amateurs, which is why we have stay at home events. My son's house is about a six block walk from our own home. Three of my four kids live within walking distance. The fourth requires a 10 minute drive and 20-30 minutes of searching for a parking space. Her and her husband's coop apartment is a two block walk from the Forest Hills subway station. a neighborhood adjacent to our own. They don't own a car. Uber and Lyft people. They rent a car for trips.

I am visiting family in Boston. Spending the afternoon on a voter registration drive.

It will be our "Last of the season" swim and barbecue party. But with any luck we can sneak in a couple more, but the party meanders into the house.

Then after that it's as if a curtain falls and it's pruning and yard maintenance as it starts cooling off - I'm near Sacramento so it's cold nights warm days in the fall.

(I do that work in secret so that people continue to believe that plants and landscaping naturally behave for me but not for them... LOL. "It's the damnedest thing, I tell ya. I never see him out in the yard. How does that happen?").

Then we start planning winter trips to Tucson, Florida, or wherever it's warm.

I normally don't worry about what day it is when I work, although my girlfriend insists on not helping me (which includes doing the driving) on Saturdays during football season. I had already promised one customer that I would do some work at her horse boarding facility starting on Monday, September 3rd and those assorted jobs will likely take me a few days. Some weeks I work everyday (5 to 10 hours/day) but most weeks I manage to have 2 to 4 days off to catch up on odds and ends around our place.
