I used to wear a tie. My mother was the one who showed how to ‘tie’ a tie. I think the knot she showed me was the “Four in Hand.” IIRC, the FiH resulted in a skinny knot resembling an asymmetrical ice cream cone. Somewhere I picked up the “Windsor” or “Half Windsor”; it results in a symmetrical triangle that looks much better. You guys having to wear a tie for work, what do you tie? If I wear a tie now, there is a union or an exit.........

I strongly prefer the FIH knot. It, along with the half Windsor, is what I most often use for non-bow ties. I find those two knots work for every collar style that I might wear. Veering from those two knots requires me to think more about sartorial details than I normally care to.

FWIW, there are literally dozens of tie knots one may choose. I twice tried the Eldredge knot. It garnered a lot of "oohs and ahs," which, frankly, isn't all that thrilling for me as I don't much care to have have my attire be a topic of discussion. (Who not in the rag trade wants to approached/remembered for something so trite as what they wear?) Fortunately, no strangers felt obliged to remark upon it, and I don't mind close friends and acquaintances doing so. Be that as it may, I'm not naive to the reality that one's donning something for one's own amusement will occasionally attract others to focus on one's indulgence; I'm well aware that I risk being entreated to banal banter by wearing winsomely unwonted whatnots.

In any case, the Eldredge is too elaborate for me to wear on a regular days; however, for a swanky party, it makes for a whimsical change of pace.

Aside:
Am I the only one who's noticed (1) the dreadful press on the shirts pictured above and/or (2) the inelegant pairing of the knots and the collars on the shirts with which they're pictured?

Mikael Vejdemo-Johansson, a mathematician in Stockholm, recently led a small team on a quest to discern how many tie knots are possible. Their results, uploaded to arXiv, say there are 177,147 different ways to tie the knot of a necktie. That is 177,062 more ways than were found in 1999 by Cambridge mathematicians Yong Mao and Thomas Fink, who arrived at 85 possible ways to tie a tie.

i've always done over, under, around, and through. Dad taught me that one, and it has worked well most of the time.

The belt buckle is not so important if you want to sport the bolo tie you should wear a western suit. Those were the only suits I ever had.

They do work with traditional ties as well.

Big garish belt buckles are typically bull riding trophies
