Have you seen the film Atomic Blonde?

I DVR'd it because I have a thing for spy novels, so I thought I'd give it a shot. The movie is okay enough, but what surprised me about it is that the film seems like it was made by someone craving the '80s megaclub scene. Take a look at the soundtrack...It's Depeche Mode, Siouxsie and the Banshees, New Order, Bowie, Falco, The Fixx, Re-Flex, Der Kommissar, The Cure, Flock of Seagulls, Echo and the Bunnymen, Duran Duran, 'Til Tuesday, and others. How The Smiths and Pet Shop got left out is beyond me...

I sat there watching the movie and spent more time remembering the awesome 1980s "post-disco" club scene in NYC, London and Spain. I don't know how many folks here are old enough to have gone to 54, Palladium, Heaven, The Saint, Limelight, The Garage, Danceteria, Space, and Ku...."Doing nothing" meant you weren't going to one of them on Saturday night...Those were heady days...beautiful people being glamorous while enjoying sex, drugs, and booze with friends and strangers in beautiful surroundings flooded with great music that got its greatness from the DJ as much as from the original artists. ...As party scenes go, what else could one want?...No surprise a film director loaded up a movie with music from that period.

So, while the movie is okay, it's now a fave of mine for its sounds.

One of the best movies of last year.. loved it. The music is awesome and gives me flashbacks.

I had to watch the film a second time to actually pay attention to the plot rather than the tunes. The movie plot and imagery is enjoyable as cool as the music.

The flashback effect may be pretty common among folks of a certain age. The first time I watched the movie, my lady friend and I kept talking about "this and that" event that we connected with the songs. She and I first met about 15 years ago, and our young adult period had a lot of overlap. Surprisingly, however, we never crossed paths; we were just in different "subcircles" within the same overall social circles. We'd already discovered that about the "civilized" aspects of our younger lives, but we didn't know the phenomenon extended into the "wild and crazy" sides.
