Harry Chapin -the man sang stories

I love many of his tunes. What are your afvorites?

Let's start it off with Taxi

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c5dwksSbD34

Love Harry Chapin and he is sorely missed as nobody ever filled that same niche.

We saw him at least ten times over the years and ever concert was a gem.

My favorite is A BETTER PLACE TO BE. I used to sing my kids to sleep to it at night and when my daughter got married we did the father/daughter dance to it.

Every time I hear about a Vegas type mass shooting I am reminded of SNIPER. I also have come to love the TAXI sequel and it always makes me smile wistfully.

People know him for CATS IN THE CRADLE - and while that is good - he has at least a dozen songs better. MR TANNER is amazing as is COREY'S COMING

The best song ever written about disc jockeys is W.O.L. D.

Springsteen tells a great story about Chapin and a motel parking lot where it was Harry to got Bruce to do more work for the cause. And Bruce has done a lot.

Boy do I miss him and his music.

Thank you for the reminder to play more of him.

You mentioned 'a Better 'place To Be' definitely one of his best.

I always liked Mail Order Annie too

Both songs that you mention are about the same human need to have the closeness of another human being. And when you get right down to it - that is the one thing that unites all of us. We are all people that need people. I love the line at the end of A BETTER PLACE TO BE when the little man puts his glass down and says to the overweight barmaid that he will go home with her and return the favor that the beautiful woman did earlier for him. It reminds me of his great song CIRCLE where it all is one big story that keeps on retelling itself over and over again with just different actors.

Great thread - thank you for it.

Taxi, for sure! The male singer doing the high voice mid song is remarkable. Starts about 3:45.

Baby's so high that she's skying
Yes she's flying, afraid to fall
I'll tell you why baby's crying
'Cause she's dying, aren't we all

Try doing it high voice.

And here he does it live; the fella doesn't do it quite as good live as the recording but that's almost always the case. Obviously the same time in the song. Taxi and Sequel live.

There are a few musicians that are consummate story tellers, Harry Chapin was definitely one, here's some more:

My favourite is an Aussie:

And this guy can build a mood like no other:
